Munday Wins Class 1A Division II Re-Match

Texas high school football state championship playoffs

Munday wins Texas high school football Class 1A Division II State Championship

Same teams, same game, similar - but different, results. A year ago, in the 2011 edition of the Class A Division II State Championship game, Tenaha’s Texas Tech bound speedster Reginald Davis scored five TD’s from the quarterback position in a 52-28 route of Munday High School. This year another star shined brightly in the title game rematch, this time in a purple and gold uniform instead.

Munday’s senior QB Dee Paul capped off a stellar career with a dominant performance in their title game. The once SMU commit (now uncommitted), and ironically AP State Defensive Player of the Year, took the ball 57 yards to the house on the second play of the game and never looked back in the Mogul’s revenge effort against the Tigers. In the 42-14 blowout title-grabbing victory, the speedy Paul (who also holds 2 Track State Championships) rushed for 262 yards on 16 carries including 2 other scores of 55 and 60 yards to earn UIL Offensive Player of the Game honors. He finishes with 1,953 yards and 32 touchdowns on the season, and 99 career touchdowns on the ground, an amazing feat for a player who also plays significant time at Free Safety on the other side of the ball at the same time.

Munday’s offense, led by Paul, did not disappoint all year long, never scoring less than 34 points in a game, and continued that trend here with the 42 points on 6 TD’s and 3 of 6 successful 2 point conversion attempts.  Running back Roddrick Taylor had two touchdowns on the ground (18 yards and 19 yards) in an outstanding supporting effort. The Moguls also added a TD on the other side of the ball thanks to DE L.J. Collier’s pass tip to himself for the 36 yard untouched return to the end zone, earning him the UIL Defensive Player of the Game honors.

After the 14-14 halftime tie, the Munday defense held Tenaha to 221 total yards and a blank on the scoreboard in the second half.  The Munday Moguls earned their 3rd State Title in school history and second under Coach Patrick Corcoran (67-21 overall in 7 years at Munday). The 42-14 Munday victory brings their championship record to 3-2, dropping the Tenaha Tigers’ record to 2-2.

Though the loss will be disappointing for the time being, Tenaha’s future looks bright. Just as Tenaha fought back from a 1-3 record to open the year to end up in the championship game, Tenaha will fight back from this loss next year. The Tigers youthful team only had ONE Senior in the starting lineup today, a defensive lineman, and will only lose 3 total seniors to graduation. Here are some players that look to make some noise next year for the Tenaha Tigers:

  • QB/DB J.R. Hill, Jr.
  • RB/LB Chavis Gregory, Jr.
  • LB DeAaron Roland, Sr.
  • WR/DB Keontas Davis, Jr.
  • DL Denzel Williams, Jr.
  • RB/DB Cobe Caraway, Soph.
  • TE/DL Jacobi Ivy, Jr.

Yes, football season is over for both of these teams, but the athletes are not finished. Thanks to the wonderful world of small school 1A football, these athletes move on to shake things up in additional sports as well.   The Munday Senior class has put together a spectacular resume including: 1-1 in UIL Football State Championship Games, back-to-back Track and Field UIL State Championships, and a UIL Basketball Tournament Regional Final appearance. Senior LB/TE Ryder Cude put it best in a post game interview on Fox Sports Southwest, “We’re here to win in everything we do.”
