Huntsville Hires Belton’s Rodney Southern

Belton's head coach Rodney Southern has accepted the head coaching position at Huntsville.  He had led the Tigers to an overall 35-38 record in the past 7 seasons,   He replaces Shane Martin who resigned with a 17-26 record during 4 years with the Hornets.

Southern's teams won a district title in 2009 and made it to the playoffs twice. Before coming to take over the Tigers, he was the head coach for the Marshall Mavericks from 2002-2006 going 36-24.  He took over the Mavericks who had gone 15-15 in the previous 3 seasons before he arrived and took them to the 2004 state championship game just 3 years later.  They made the return trip to the 2005 championship game the next year.   Before that, he was an assistant and defensive coordinator with Copperas Cove from 1994-2001.  At Belton, Southern inherited a team that was 4-26 in the previous 3 seasons before he arrived.  He will need his history of turning programs around at Huntsville after the Hornets went 2-8 last year and their most wins in a season over the past 23 years has only been 8 games (8-4 in 2009 & 8-4 in 1992).  Coach Southern will be the Hornets 7th head coach since Joe Clements retired in 1993.

Coach Martin took over the Hornets in 2010 after being the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for 2 seasons prior. This was his first head coaching position.
