Rio Grande City Hires One Of Their Own

The Rattlers from Rio Grande City have hired former graduate Aaron Garcia to be their next head coach. Previous head coach Carlos Longoria has been reassigned from his position after he compiled a 17-36 record during his 5 seasons with the team.

Coach Longoria led the Rattlers to the playoffs twice in those 5 seasons. He has also been a head coach at Raymondville from 1999-2003 going 27-25 and at Mission Veterans Memorial from 2004-2008 going 24-26. His all-time coaching record is now 68-87. He was an assistant at La Joya for two seasons before taking over the Rattlers

Garcia was assistant at Rio Grande City La Grulla for the past 2 seasons. Before that, he was assistant at Donna from 2012-2013. His only other head coaching position was at La Joya Juarez-Lincoln from 2008-2011 going 11-29. Coach Garcia graduated from Rio Grande City in 1988.

The Rattlers have an All-Time Record of 265-448-19 over 732 games. They return 5 all-district players from last years team. The offense is led by 1st Team OL Jose Guerrero, 1st Team RB Casimiro Olivares, 2nd Team OL Dillon McGuffin and 2nd Team QB SOPH Jason Perez. The lone defensive all-district player is 2nd Team DL Oscar Montalvo. Returning those players will help the offense that only averaged 15.6 points per game last year. The defense will need to reload. They kept things close only giving up 21.6 points per game. Five of their losses were by 11 points or less. They came within 1 point of upsetting Top 20 Edinburg-Vela.

Longoria was a popular coach but sometimes a change at the top means bigger numbers in the win column. Rattler fans are ready to go back to the playoffs.
