Defense Rules the Day
The Refugio Bobcats beat the Post Antelopes 28-7 in the Class 2A Division I Championship game. This was the Bobcats 5th all-time state championship. They also won in 1970 (co-champs), 1982, 2011 and 2016. This was Post first title game.

It was a defensive 1st quarter as both defenses shut the other teams offenses down. Each team threw interceptions. Refugio then had the ball stripped from their receiver and Post defensive back Nathan McDaniel picked it up and returned to Refugio 28. After two first downs, Post running back Ashton Jefferson (2,002 yards rushing on the season) ran it in from 6 yards out. Post led 7-0 with 35 seconds left in the quarter. There were only 103 yards of total offense in the quarter.
After trading punts, the Bobcats got on the board after taking over 5 minutes off of the clock. Quarterback Austin Ochoa ran it in from 2 yards out on 4th down to tie the score at 7 with 3:21 left. Post took over and ran the clock out. The half ends with the teams tied at 7. The teams now have a total of 162 total yards at the half.
The Bobcats took the opening drive of the 2nd half and scored. Ochoa ran it over from 1 yard out and Refugio led 14-7. The defenses once again controlled the rest of the quarter until the Bobcats got a 61 yard pass play on the 2nd to last play of the quarter. Refugio had the ball deep in Post territory as the quarter ended. The Bobcats held the ball for 8:13 of the quarter. Through 3 quarters, Post has 43 total yards while Refugio has 261.
Two plays into the quarter, Ochoa ran it in for the 3rd touchdown of the game, this time from 4 yards outs. The Bobcats now led 21-7. Post got stopped on downs and Refugio took over at midfield. On the Bobcats first play, they completed a 42 yard pass to the Post 9 yard line. Ochoa ran it in from 1 yard out for his 4th touchdown of the game on a 4th down play. Refugio led 28-7 with 6:55 left in the game. The Antelopes were unable to do anything on their next drive and punted. Refugio punted and then Post ran out the clock.
