Westlake Breaks the Drought at Title Game

Chaps Shutout Wildcats in Final TXHSFB Game of Season

The Austin Westlake Chaparrals (15-1) beat the Denton Guyer Wildcats (14-2) in the Class 5A Division II Championship. This was Westlake's second championship in nine tries. Their other title was in 1996. Guyer falls to 2-2 in championship games. They won in 2012 and 2013.

Austin Westlake got the opening kickoff and took it down the field. They got a 5 yard scoring pass from quarterback Kirkland Michaux to receiver George Kyle. That made the score 7-0 early on. Guyers Duece Harmon returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown BUT there was holding called bring the ball back. Guyer converted three 4th down plays, two of them after starting quarterback Eli Stowers got injured. Freshman Jackson Arnold came in and threw one to the end zone but it was intercepted by Michael Taaffe. The Chaparrals went 3 and out and punted. Guyer ball as the quarter ended

Guyer was forced to punt. Westlake put together an 11 play 61 yard drive and scored on a 33 yard pass to Mason Mangum. The touchdown came on a 4th & 11 play. That made the score 14-0. The teams traded punts and the Wildcats got the ball back at their own 15 with 3:45 remaining in the half. After another Guyer punt, Westlake had the ball at their own 32 with 1:13 left and 2 timeouts. The Guyer defense shut them down and that is how the half ended.

Guyer could not get any offense going. Westlake's receiver Jackson Coker caught a pass from Michaux from 39 yards out. That made the score 21-0. Guyer offense could not do anything again and Westlake got a field goal. David Ledbetter kicked one from 27 yards out to make it 24-0. Guyer has the ball as the quarter ended.

Guyer made it to the goal line but were stopped on a 4th & Goal from the 1. Westlake fumbled though giving Guyer the ball back at the Chap 10 yard line. The Wildcats pass on 4th down is intercepted by Henry Smogur. The Chaps then ran out the clock.
