Byron Nelson High School Hires Their First Head Coach

Byron Nelson High School has hired Brian Polk as the head coach and campus athletic coordinator. The school board of the newest school in Northwest ISD approved the hiring of Polk who is the current athletic director and football coach at Van Alstyne.

Polk spent three seasons at Van Alstyne and had previous coaching stops at Allen (offensive coordinator 2001-2005) and Garland (offensive coordinator 1999-2000). He was part of the Owls 1999 Class 5A Division II championship team.

The Panthers of Van Alstyne finished the 2008 season at 7-4. They finished second in District 10-3A with a 4-1 mark and reached the playoffs, but lost to eventual runner-up Celina in the bi-district round. Before last season, Van Alstyne had not reached the postseason since 2005 which was the year before Polk arrived. The first two seasons under Polk was still rough going as the Panthers went 3-17 during that stretch.

Byron Nelson High School opens this fall with just freshmen and sophomores. They will start playing a varsity schedule in 2010 as a 4A school.

2009 Player of the Year Predictions – 2A

Class 2A crowned two Champions in 2008 that not too many people saw coming, unless you’re from Daingerfield or Muleshoe.  The Mules won the Division I title led by Senior Wes Wood’s 4500 yard season, and those will be some big shoes to fill.  The Tigers won with a dominating defense lead by Defensive Player of the Year Carl Moore, punctuated by a virtual shutout in the Championship Game 26-8 (Cisco’s 8 came after Coach Bowman’s Gatorade shower).

Those Tigers look to make 2009 a great year Offensively, returning several key playmakers.  Daingerfield’s Quarterback Tyler Boyd, All State Honorable Mention, is returning for his Junior year with a State Championship already under his belt.  Boyd will have a couple of familiar deep threat targets to go to as well.  Chris Jones will return to campus for his Senior season and the speedster Keyarris Garrett will be back for a Junior campaign.

But wait, there’s more!  Daingerfield also returns a District 17-2A Co-MVP in KoKo Smith.  This 1000 yard rusher made some big plays during the Tigers dominating playoff run, and in my opinion he has the best shot to take home offensive Player of the Year in 2009 from this Daingerfield team.  The only problem is the Tigers now have so many players to spread the ball around to that they might not get an individual effort that would warrant POY honors.

For that, we should look towards an offensive attack that’s weighted heavily on one aspect of the game.  Vanderbilt Industrial built a solid Quarterfinal contender with an outstanding running game and dominance on the offensive line.  The bad news is the Cobras are losing their District MVP Running Back Ryan Richter and Second Team All State Offensive Lineman Robbie Riehs.  The Good news is that Industrial’s explosive Running Back Matt Anderson will return for his Senior season (if you doubt Anderson’s skill, go to the 3:31 point of the Industrial Hitchcock Video Extra).  If these Cobras can rebuild their offensive line, look for Coach Kuhlmann’s team to make another long playoff run.

Other players that should have great seasons in 2009 include; New Waverly’s Tyren Watts, Omaha Paul Pewitt’s D.J. Burleson, Refugio’s Jourdan Ortiz, and maybe even Thor Long from Callisburg returning for a Junior season.

2009 looks to be a great year for some big offense in the 2A ranks, so stick with Lone Star Gridiron for all the highlights and analysis.

2009 Player of the Year Predictions – 1A

2008 was a great year for Texas High School football and the 1A schools were right in the thick of it.  We saw a district, 1-1A, take home two State Titles for only the fourth time ever.  Congratulations to both Canadian and Stratford for their great seasons, but now it’s time to look forward to next year.

The small East Texas town of Cayuga featured one of the best running backs that I saw all season long, a player that helped his team advance to the Division 2 Title game.  Traylon Shead took home 1A Player of the Year honors as well as a District 20-1A MVP in 2008.  3500 yards rushing and a mind boggling 52 Touchdowns makes this junior an overwhelming favorite to repeat as 1A Player of the Year.  The Wildcats will have to fill the void at Quarterback with the departure of Broc January, and their Offensive Line will have to replace two of their big bulls; First Team All-State Cory Perry and All-State Honorable Mention Kyle Wiseman.

The Wildcats have a solid playmaker in Malcome Kennedy coming back for a senior season, and two or three other kids that bear the last name Shead are also suiting up next season.  So this next sentence won’t come as a big shock to very many people.

If Shead stays healthy, he’ll repeat as 1A POY and the Wildcats will take a State Championship back to East Texas.  How’s that for a prediction?

Traylon Shead is not alone at the top of the 1A ranks.  The Wellington Skyrockets from the North Texas region have a pretty good quarterback coming back.  Westin Williams played some brilliant mistake free football in 2008.  The Junior only threw one interception in a 2200 yard regular season that ended at the hands of the eventual State Champions, Canadian.

The State Champion Canadian Wildcats also return a quarterback for his senior season in Brandon Robinson.  When you lead your team to a second straight State title, in two different classifications, confidence won’t be a problem for Robinson.  The Wildcats will have several holes to fill on the senior dominated 2008 team, but Head Coach Kyle Lynch will have this team poised for a three-peat in 2009.

Other playmakers that will make a big impact in 2009 include; First Team All State Running Back Desmond Guy from Itasca, 19-1A MVP Kevin Pope from Mount Enterprise, and Will Kirchhoff from Falls City who also took home a District MVP award.

The 2009 season looks to be a great one for you 1A watchers.  Stay tuned to Lone Star Gridiron for the best coverage of high school football across the State of Texas.

Case McCoy Will Be a Longhorn

Case McCoy

The Texas Longhorns will have another McCoy throwing touchdowns after Colt leaves. Quarterback Case McCoy, the younger brother of Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, has verbally committed to play for the Longhorns.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pounder from Graham, Texas, completed 168 of 285 passes (59 percent) for 2,226 yards and 17 touchdowns against 10 interceptions last fall. As a sophomore, he threw for 2,008 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Auburn, Arizona, Texas A&M and Colorado State also extended scholarships to Case.
