Klein Wins Houston Texans Sunday State Qualifying Tournament

The Klein Bearkats were the surprise winner of the Houston Texans State Qualifying Tournament held Sunday May 24th. Houston Chavez was the host for the 2nd day in a row and they once again did a fabulous job.

In the championship game Klein faced the other semifinal winner Tomball and it came down to the last minute of play. Klein held a 19-12 halftime advantage but Tomball came from behind to take a 30-27 lead late in the game. Klein responded though and scored a touchdown with less than a minute remaining to win 33-30.

In the semifinal games to determine who would qualify for the state tournament, Tomball extended their 20-6 halftime lead over Cypress Creek to win 39-13. Tomball’s WR Jordan Leslie was once again the man to watch as he made one spectacular catch after another. In the other semifinal game, Klein and San Antonio Alamo Heights traded touchdowns but it came down to who could make the extra points. Klein made 2 more than Alamo Heights to win 33-31.

There was lots of controversy when it was time to figure out who was to advance to the semifinals. Everything was by the rule book so this was no fault of the Houston Chavez coaches. In Pool A, Spring was disqualified for suiting up too many players. They had 22 and the rule states 20. The extra 2 players did not play but they were counted anyway even though they sat with the coaches in the end zone. Then it was originally reported that Cypress Falls had beaten Klein in game 1 but when Cypress Falls was announced as the pool winner both the Falls coach and the Klein coach said the score was wrong and that Klein had won. In Pool D, Katy Seven Lakes had a little controversy also. It was decided that all the games with Langham Creek in pool play would be thrown out since Langham had already qualified. Seven Lake finished with a 2-1 record while Cypress Creek had an overall 1-2 record BUT Cypress Creek advanced with more points since the Langham games did not count.

Here is how the pool play went.

Pool A
Cypress Falls Klein Spring The Woodlands

Spring and Klein went into game 3 with 2-0 records. (Spring did not know they were disqualified yet and we did not know Klein was 2-0 because of the wrong score posted). Klein and Spring traded punches in this one with Klein winning 48-40.

Scores:

Klein – 28 Cypress Falls – 24
Spring – 34 The Woodlands – 24

Pool B
San Antonio Alamo Heights Klein Collins Lewisville Pearland

San Antonio Alamo Heights won this pool with a 3-0 record. They won games 2 and 3 though by only 1 point each. This was one of the few 4A teams here but you could tell they throw the football around a lot. Their receivers just did not drop any passes. Pearland was a surprise with a 2-1 record and just barely missing the semis with a 1 point loss to Alamo Heights. Lewisville made the trip from Dallas with their new coach Dick Olin who was the coach at Baytown Lee for the last 17 years. The Farmers went 1-2 but look for them to improve in the future. This pool was not without controversy. In game 3 between Alamo Height s and Lewisville, time ran out on a play where there was a defensive penalty on Alamo Heights but there was a 4 second call on the pass. The 7 on 7 representative ruled that the 4 second rule overruled the defensive penalty and there was no further play.

Scores:

San Antonio Alamo Heights – 27 Klein Collins – 12
Pearland – 32 Lewisville – 21

San Antonio Alamo Heights – 27 Pearland – 26

Pool C
Katy Cinco Ranch Pearland Dawson Conroe Oak Ridge Tomball

Pool C could have finished up with any of the 4 teams being the pool winner going into game 3. Each team was 1-1 entering game 3 so the winner of the pool would need to win their game and have the team they beat win the other game. Tomball won game 3 over Pearland Dawson while Katy Cinco Ranch beat Conroe Oak Ridge. Since Tomball beat Cinco Ranch in game 2, Tomball was the team to advance.

Scores:

Katy Cinco Ranch – 44 Pearland Dawson – 36 (OT)
Conroe Oak Ridge – 40 Tomball – 36

Tomball – 33 Katy Cinco Ranch – 26
Pearland Dawson – 31 Conroe Oak Ridge – 24

Tomball (2-1) Katy Cinco Ranch (2-1) Pearland Dawson (1-2) Conroe Oak Ridge (1-2)

Pool D
Houston Langham Creek Cypress Creek Pasadena Memorial Katy Seven Lakes

A Katy Seven Lakes controversy was mentioned at the beginning of this article but that was not the only one involving them. They played in the bubble in the first game vs. Pasadena Memorial. At the end of the game the horn sounds but it was outside and the coaches inside with radios would be told that is the end of the game and they would stop play inside. There was maybe a 2 second delay. The problem was that the horn sounded but before they could stop play inside, Seven Lakes snapped the ball (after the horn) and scored to take the lead. . The 7 on 7 representative had to step in again and rule that the horn had sounded so Pasadena Memorial was the victor. Langham Creek was dominant in their first two games but lost in OT to Seven Lakes in the 3rd game. They could not advance to the semis because they had already qualified last week. Cypress Creek advanced out of the pool because of the controversy listed previously about this pool.

Scores:

Houston Langham Creek – 40 Cypress Creek – 12
Pasadena Memorial – 26 Katy Seven Lakes – 22

Houston Langham Creek – 48 Pasadena Memorial – 25
Katy Seven Lakes – 33 Cypress Creek – 25

Katy Seven Lakes – 54 Houston Langham Creek – 41
Cypress Creek – 39 Pasadena Memorial – 14

Lake Travis wins the Round Rock Westwood SQT, two others also advance

The Lake Travis Cavaliers began the 2009 season just as they ended their 2008 campaign, winning. The Cavs went undefeated in their pool (that included Brenham, Austin Bowie, and Round Rock) and rolled over Abilene Cooper and Cedar Park to take the title.

The runner up, Cedar Park, also had an impressive road to the championship game. The Timberwolves went 2 and 1 in Pool C, which featured the likes of Bastrop, Copperas Cove, and New Braunfels Canyon. Cedar Park beat a tough Pasadena Dobie in the quarterfinals, and knocked off Marble Falls to get into the championship game.

This State Qualifying Tournament featured a 32 team bracket and that means that 3 teams advance to the state tournament. Marble Falls was the third team in with their quarterfinal win over Austin Anderson. The Mustangs went undefeated in a pool that included Dripping Springs, Lockhart, and host school Round Rock Westwood.

Houston Chavez Wins Saturdays Houston Texans 7-on-7 SQT

Houston Chavez won the Houston Texans 7-on-7 SQT Saturday that they hosted in wild fashion. The event was held at the Methodist Training Center and was a well run event.

Chavez played Houston Bellaire in the championship game. Bellaire led 32-22 at the half but Chavez came back and won the game on an interception return with less than 2 minutes left in the game. Chavez was very athletic and very physical. Throughout pool play and in the semis, they made everyone else look slow. Bellaire was the only team that matched up with them physically and it showed in the championship game.

In the semis Chavez took care of business easily defeating Channelview 47-0. In the other game, Bellaire behind QB Adrian Nelson defeated Spring Westfield and their star QB Jacoby Walker 43-28. Both Chavez and Bellaire will be very competitive at the championships at College Station in July.

Here is how pool play went.

Pool A : A&M Consolidated Houston Bellaire Cypress Woods Fort Bend Dulles

This pool came down to the last round of games. Game 2 finished in crazy fashion. With less than 1 minute remaining, Cypress Woods was leading A&M Consolidated 14-13 and Houston Bellaire was leading Fort Bend Dulles 20-19. On the other end of the field, Dulles hit a 45 yard pass to score on the last play to win their game. In game 3, Cypress Woods jumped out to an early lead and held on for the victory over Dulles to leave these two teams with 1-2 records. That meant that the winner of the Houston Bellaire/A&M Consolidated would advance to the semis. Bellaire had an early 24-7 lead and halftime and they went on to win 38-19.

La Villa SQT

La Villa has announced the teams that will be participating in their Division II 7-on-7 State Qualifying Tournament for this Saturday May 23rd. A big Lone Star salute goes out to La Villa Head Coach Eugenio Garza for getting this information to us. We at LSG also want to applaud Coach Garza for the way the pools will be set up. Over the years, there has been lots of controversy on how the host teams seem to stack their pool in order for them to have the best chance to make it to state. (Even some LSG folks have mentioned it) This year, La Villa will decide the pools when everyone shows up Saturday morning. La Villa will be the smallest team at their own tournament and if anyone should stack the pool it should be them but they are determined to beat them all fair and square. I like it!!!

Here are the teams that are participating in this great SQT.

La Villa (1A)
Rice Consolidated (2A)
Palacios (3A)
Lago Vista (2A)
Ben Bolt (1A)
Hidalgo (3A)
Port Isabel (3A)
Lyford (3A)
