Week 4 — Highlights and Records

Brookshire Royal defeated Sweeny 39-25 in a matchup of undefeated teams and LSG was there!! Sitting in the stands with the great fans from Sweeny and a full moon lighting up the sky made it a great night for Texas High School Football. Sweeny had a tough time hanging on to the football and gave it to the Falcons on their end of the field 4 times. That and Royals superstar running back Brandon Williams racking up 277 yards rushing gave the Falcons the victory.

Wimberley dominates early but barely escapes with a win against Sealy and LSG was there!!
The #5 ranked Wimberley Texans spent most of Friday night building a 31-17 over the #4 ranked Sealy Tigers. With just over one minute left in the game nearly everyone at the stadium assumed Wimberley would salt away the time and walk out with the win – everyone except the Texans offense. A Wimberley fumble in their own endzone was recovered for a touchdown by Sealy and
suddenly it was a new game. Sealy recovered the ensuing onside kick and scored again with just 7 seconds remaining. Sealy Head Coach Jimmie Mitchell decided to go for the two-point conversion and the win. There was no immediate call as Ricky Seals-Jones tried to go straight up the gut, but after a few nervous seconds, the fans at Texans Stadium erupt when officials signaled that it was no good. The Sealy head coach was penalized and then tossed from the game after storming onto the field incensed at the call. Another unsportsmanlike conduct call saw Sealy attempting their second straight onside-kick, this time from their own 15 yard line. Once again, Sealy recovered the high bouncer and had enough time for one play. A bit of trickery and improvisation turned into a long run by the Sealy QB that was stopped just 15 yards short of a miracle touchdown. Had the Sealy coaching staff not backed them up so far with penalties, it easily would have ended up as a score.
Wimberley was led by running back Dennis Smith who scored all of the Texan TDs with 3 rushing TDs and returned an interception 75 yards for another score.

Gilmer won 39-18 over Class 2A Division I #1 Daingerfield. Daingerfield is now 34-3 since the beginning of the 2008 season and all 3 losses have been to Gilmer. The Buckeyes scored 27 first half points to earn the victory. Daingerfield’s 15 game winning streak is now over.

#22 1A DI Stamford defeated #8 1A DII Hamlin 18-13 in their 83rd all-time meeting.

Austin Lake Travis won the “Bonfire Battle” vs. Dripping Springs 38-0. It was the Cavaliers 8th win in a row at the battle.

Goldthwaite rallied to beat Mart 29-23 in a battle of top ten 1A teams. Mart led 23-7 at half before Goldthwaite turned the heat up and scored 22 unanswered points including a touchdown with only 1:16 remaining in the game.

Longview finally won a close game this year after losing in the final seconds to top ranked teams Allen and Lufkin. This time against another top ranked team the Lobos scored on a fake extra point conversion to beat #5 Abilene in overtime 32-31.

Pearland scored on a 42 yard pass play with only 11 seconds left to defeat Clear Springs in a wild one 40-38. The teams combined for 1058 yards of total offense.

San Antonio Madison running back Aaron Green ran for 241 yards and scored 4 TD’s during their 45-28 victory over Converse Judson.

Look out for 2A Tatum who has wins over #5 3A Gilmer 47-41 and #8 3A Pittsburg 41-17!! They might be good enough to win the 3A championship.

Highland Park High School recently opened a $4.4 million indoor athletic facility.

Grape Creek Grape Creek running back Eli Untermeyer ran for 420 yards and scored 6 TDs during their 46-17 win over Alpine.

Cuero star running back Trent Jackson scored a touchdown on his first carry in last weeks game. On his second carry, he injured his knee and never returned to the game. Gobbler fans will be watching this one.

Legendary Head Coach Curtis Barbay has died from a heart attack. Barbay passed out during halftime of the Eagles game with Buna. He had coached Newton since 1975, winning two state titles and compiling a 317-96-6 all-time record. Barbay was returning to the field with his team after halftime when he suddenly stopped at the goal line and kneeled down. Paramedics arrived and rushed him to a Beaumont hospital, where he died the next day.
