2012 Coaching Change: Goliad Tigers
Old Head Coach: Mark Cunningham -- Resigns after leading the Tigers to a 4-16 record over the past 2 seasons. Before coming to Goliad, Cunningham was the defensive coordinator at China Spring. He began his 29 year coaching career as an assistant at Giddings and A&M Consolidated. He had been a head coach at Pittsburg (1995-1998 (26-16-1)), Alvarado (1999-2000 (17-8)), Glen Rose (2002-2005 (27-17)) and Fort Worth Brewer (2006-2007 (2-18)). His career record is currently at 76-75-1.
New Head Coach: John Mares -- Was an assistant with the Tigers for the past 2 years. This is his 2nd time to coach for the Tigers. He was their defensive coordinator from 1986 to 1991. He left in 1991 to be an assistant at Victoria St. Joseph. He was their head coach for 14 years going 108-49-0. He has also been an assistant at Port Lavaca Calhoun, Hallettsville Sacred Heart.
Team News: The Tigers are on a 7 year losing streak going 18-53. The most wins in a season over the last 13 years is only 6 wins. They will drop down to Class 2A Division I after the recent UIL re-alignment. They will be in District 15-2A Division I along with George West, Jourdanton, Luling, Marion, San Antonio Brooks and San Antonio Cole.
