2013 LSG Texas High School Football Team Preview — Newton Eagles

Team: Newton Eagles (10-2A Division I)

Colors: Purple/White

First Varsity Season: 1915

Stadium: Singletary Stadium (Capacity 3,000)

Enrollment: 300 -- Smallest in the district out of 8 schools

Coach: W.T. Johnston (2 years) 22-4 at Newton; 22-4 all-time coaching record

Coaches Comments: WE HAVE A CHANCE TO BE BETTER BECAUSE WE ONLY LOST 1 OFFENSIVE LINEMAN, THE OL WILL BE MUCH BETTER. PLUS WE GET BACK ALL OF OUR RB'S AND RECEIVERS. THE DEFENSE WILL BE BETTER BECAUSE WE PLAYED SO MANY YOUNG KIDS ON DEFENSE, WE WILL BE MUCH MORE EXPERIENCED IN THE SECONDARY. THE DISTRICT WILL BE MUCH STRONGER BECAUSE EVERYBODY PLAYED SO MANY YOUNG KIDS. NEWTON ,KIRBYVILLE, WOODVILLE, KOUNTZE , EAST CHAMBERS ALL HAVE GOOD CHANCE AT MAKING PLAYOFFS. Expect to make another deep run into the playoffs with a majority of the team back and a good JV to go with them expect to see us playing in December again.

Notes:

Mike Says: The Eagles only graduated 7 lettermen from last years Semifinals team. They now bring back 25 lettermen with 15 of them being all-district players. Even though they are one of the smallest Division I schools, they could very well be the Class 2A Division I Champions. Their running game will be 2nd to none with Shorter and Johnson coming back. They will be a very difficult out. A repeat match-up in the semifinals against Cameron Yoe looks likely.

Chris Says: Newton is again looking to be one of the top teams in the state. Their narrow loss to eventual champion Cameron Yoe was their only setback last season. Most of last year's team returns with another year of experience. These Eagles are going to do excellent as they roll through District 10-2A and into the playoffs. They should be in the championship game this time around.
