Top Linebacker Prospects in Texas High School Football
-
Updated: August 4, 2014
In association with Elite Scouting Services we have released the Top 100 recruiting prospects. We have broken them down by position for our ongoing series. These are the best recruiting prospects across the Texas high school football world.
Linebackers (9)
Alec Dunham, Coldspring-Oakhurst, 6’0, 205
Despite not featuring ideal measureables, Dunham is a major prospect due to his ability to get to the boundary in a hurry. Dunham was an All-District performer in 22-3A as a sophomore and managed to register 71 tackles in an injury-plagued junior season. TCU is getting a player in Dunham. Don’t be surprised if Dunham goes for 1,500 yards out of the backfield this season if given the opportunity as a running back. Dunham well on his way to 1,000 or more last season before he caught the injury bug.
Landis Durham, Plano East, 6’2, 220
Durham is easy to admire from a scouting standpoint. A true modern college outside linebacker prospect for the modern college game if there ever was one. It is easy to see why Texas A&M plucked Durham, who will probably play off the edge during his final year of prep football. Durham was the Defensive Newcomer of the Year in District 10-5A after logging 91 tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions.
Nathan Fox, Houston Clear Lake, 6’2, 230
Northwestern got itself quite a steal in landing the First Team All-State performer. As a junior, Fox registered 131 tackles and 19 tackles-for-loss while picking off three passes. Mississippi State and Utah were the other major FBS offers Fox received before he decided to head to the Big 10. Fox has great instincts against the run and will be a valuable asset for the Wildcats.
Riley Garner, A&M Consolidated, 6’3, 215
Even before Texas A&M figured out it had a viable linebacker prospect within its immediate area, his junior film told the story. A consistent performer, the First Team 14-5A All-District honoree registered 110 tackles and was able to visit the end zone twice after turnovers. Garner is for real and one of the most pleasant surprises in person of the 2013 season.
Malik Jefferson, Mesquite Poteet, 6’3, 215
Jefferson is arguably the top prospect in the state of Texas regardless of position, quite simply on a different level than most outside linebackers nationally. The First Team All-State performer posted 83 tackles, 13 tackles-for-loss, and 12 sacks as a junior. Jefferson is believed to be considering Alabama, Baylor, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M. In the Elite Scouting Services Top 100, Jefferson is considered the No. 1 prospect in Lone Star State.
Richard Moore, Cedar Hill, 6’0, 200
Like TCU commit Dunham, Moore is a highly productive linebacker prospect who is considered undersized. On a team that saw more than 15 prospects sign college letters of intent a year ago with another loaded cupboard of FBS prospects for 2014, Moore will attempt to lead Cedar Hill’s defense once again. The Texas A&M verbal posted 182 tackles, 31 tackles-for-loss, and eight sacks to help Cedar Hill claim the 2013 Texas 5A-Division II state title.
Semaj Thomas, Fort Worth Southwest, 6’0, 230
TCU did not have to go far to land the First Team 7-4A All-District prospect. Thomas recently received offers from Oklahoma and Texas to test his commitment, however Thomas seems solid to TCU according to most media reports. It is easy to see why the defensive-minded Horned Frogs were quick to snag Thomas from its own backyard.
Cameron Townsend, Fort Bend Ridge Point, 6’1, 195
You could consider Townsend yet another undersized prospect, but Thomas is capable of growing into the linebacker position due to his solid athleticism. Townsend holds offers from the likes of Baylor, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas heading into this senior campaign. Townsend recorded 42 tackles, 13 tackles-for-loss, and three sacks in 2013 and will be one of the top defensive prospects on a loaded Ridge Point outfit this season.
Anthony Wheeler, Dallas Skyline, 6’2, 225
The Dallas Skyline linebacker was productive in 2013, absolutely deserving of his First Team 9-5A All-District honors as a junior after recording 110 tackles. Alabama, Baylor, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Texas. Wheeler is clearly worthy of his FBS offers and will be one of the top linebackers in the DFW metro in 2014
