Longview’s 81-Year Wait is Over

Beaumont West Brook Bruins (13-2) vs. Longview (15-0) UIL Class 6A DII Texas High School Football State Championship.
The Longview Lobos beat the Beaumont West Brook Bruins 35-34 in the Class 6A Division II Championship game. It was Longview's 2nd championship in their 5th title game. The last time the Lobos won a state championship was 1937. Head Coach John King is the father of Longview's quarterback and Offensive Player Of The Game, Haynes King. Beaumont West Brook was competing in their 2nd Championship game. They played and won their last one in 1982.
For the game, Haynes King threw for 423 yards. That puts him in 2nd place all-time for Class 6A championship games. Longview receiver Kamden Perry had 218 yards receiving which broke the all-time Class 6A championship record.
West Brook received the opening kickoff and drove to the Longview 37 before punting. They downed the punt at the Lobo 1. The teams traded punts and then Longview's running back Jessie Anderson ran it in from 4 yards out. The extra point snap was bad and they threw a pass to the end zone but it was incomplete. Longview led 6-0. The Bruins scored on their next possession when quarterback La'Ravien Elia his receiver Deonte Simpson for the score. The extra point put West Brook up 7-6. On Longview's next possession, receiver Marqualon Haynes caught a pass from Haynes King then broke a tackle and went 77 yards for the score. The extra point gave Longview the lead 13-7. The quarter ended with West Brook driving in Longview territory.
The Bruins went on to score as Elia ran it in from 22 yards out and West Brook led 14-13. After a Longview punt, Bruin running back Jakobi Holland ran it in from 35 yards out to take a 21-13 lead with 6:59 left in the half. The Lobos complete a pass to the Bruin 7 yard line but the Bruin's caused a fumble and recovered it. West Brook went 3 and out to give Longview the ball back. Two plays later, King hit Kaden Kearbey for a 40 yard touchdown pass. King then ran it in for the 2 point conversion on a fake kick but that was called back because of a Motion penalty. The extra point kick then made it 21-20 with 1:54 remaining. Longview was able to run out the quarter.
Longview drove deep into West Brook territory on their 1st possession of the 2nd half but turned the ball over on downs at the 27. The Bruins then in turn, drove to the Lobo 24 and they turned the ball over on downs. Longview used the pass to move down the field and King ran it in for the touchdown. Anderson ran it in for the 2 point conversion to make it 28 all. The conversion went to review and Anderson was ruled down so that left the score at 28-26. West Brook scored again when Elia hit Simpson from 40 yards out for a touchdown. That play was overturned so it was an incomplete pass. The quarter ends with the Bruins at the Lobo 8 yard line.
Bruins running back Holland ran it in on the 1st play of the 4th quarter. The extra point was no good giving West Brook a 34-26 lead. Longview drove down and kicked a 28 yard field goal to make the score 34-29 with 8:17 left in the game. Longview gets a long pass to get them in position and Anderson ran it in from 1 yard out. The 2 point conversion was no good and Longview now led 35-34 with 4:42 remaining. West Brook fumbled at midfield which was caused by Tyshawn Taylor and recovered by the Lobos Micheal Martin. On a 3rd and 6 play, the Lobos picked up the 1st down with 2:05 in the game and West Brook out of timeouts. Longview was able to run the clock on.
