* Had 2 wins in 2010, 4 in 2011 and 7 in 2012 under coach Devon Dorris

  • Mike Says: The Hornets got back to the playoff for the first time in 6 years last year. It may be difficult to get back though this year. They will go 5-5 or 6-4 in the regular season and fight it out for that fourth playoff spot.
  • Chris Says: Azle’s loss in the opening round of the playoffs was a heart-breaker for the Hornets.  It was one of only a few close games last year.  Coach Dorris’ squad either got rolled or walked away with an easy win in most games.  This year, they will be forced to scrap hard against teams that they rolled last season and as the top teams in District 5-4A look just as strong, Azle will likely not surprise any of them.  A good season for the Hornets would be 5-5 and 1 playoff game.

Notes:
* Have not made the playoffs since 2005

  • Mike Says: The Hornets bring back 15 starters from last years team. They will need that experience to try and turn things around. Look for them to go 3-7 or 4-6 in the regular season and come in 6th or 7th in the district.
  • Chris Says: Azle is in a good position to make the playoffs with so many returning starters and a district that drops off rather sharply after Wichita Falls Rider and Denton Guyer.  There is a good chance you will see the Hornets in postseason.

Coaching Changes — Azle

Azle has hired a former Hornet as their next head coach. Devon Dorris will replace Eddie Paul who resigned last month

Pual leaves after three years at the helm. He resigns after going 5-25 during his time with the Hornets.

Dorris graduated from Azle in 1995. He returned after college to be the freshman head coach and then secondary coach for the varsity until 2006. He then took a job as secondary coach at Saginaw Boswell. He was Boswells defensive coordinator the past three years.

Boswell was in the same district with Azle last season. Boswell went 7-4 while Azle went 3-7. After a second-round playoff run in 2005, Azle has only eight wins in the last four seasons. They are currently on a 4 year losing streak. They will be a member of District 5-4A along with Aledo, Saginaw Boswell, Keller Timber Creek, North Richland Hills Birdville, Justin Northwest Nelson, Springtown and Fort Worth Brewer.
