Derek Long, Austin Westlake's head football coach and athletic director, has decided to retire.
Long led Westlake to 54 wins and one state championship game in his six seasons as head coach. He has been a coach at Westlake for the last 26 years. Derek became the Chaparrals' defensive coordinator in 1992 and succeeded Ron Schroeder as head coach in 2003.
Long went 54-22 at Westlake, with three district titles and a trip to the 2006 Class 5A, Division I state championship game. The Chaparrals lost to Southlake Carroll 43-29 in the Alamodome.
Under Long, Westlake twice reached the state semifinals. He leaves the school second on the all time win list, trailing only Schroeder, who was 187-27-3 from 1987-2002.
The Chaparrals started the 2008 season 0-3 start but recovered to finish 9-5. They made it to the Class 5A, Division I quarterfinals, where they lost 24-21 to San Antonio Clark.
