Byron Nelson High School has hired Brian Polk as the head coach and campus athletic coordinator. The school board of the newest school in Northwest ISD approved the hiring of Polk who is the current athletic director and football coach at Van Alstyne.
Polk spent three seasons at Van Alstyne and had previous coaching stops at Allen (offensive coordinator 2001-2005) and Garland (offensive coordinator 1999-2000). He was part of the Owls 1999 Class 5A Division II championship team.
The Panthers of Van Alstyne finished the 2008 season at 7-4. They finished second in District 10-3A with a 4-1 mark and reached the playoffs, but lost to eventual runner-up Celina in the bi-district round. Before last season, Van Alstyne had not reached the postseason since 2005 which was the year before Polk arrived. The first two seasons under Polk was still rough going as the Panthers went 3-17 during that stretch.
Byron Nelson High School opens this fall with just freshmen and sophomores. They will start playing a varsity schedule in 2010 as a 4A school.
