Commerce Hires Scott Wells
-
Updated: February 26, 2009
Commerce ISD has hired Scott Wells as the new athletic director and head football coach. Wells was an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Springtown last season where he helped the Porcupines make the playoffs with a 6-4 record.
The Commerce Tigers finished a disappointing 1-9 last season under head coach Bryan Price. The 9 losses tied a school record.
Wells began his career at Winnsboro High School in 1992 as assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator. From Winnsboro, he became an assistant coach at Little Cypress-Mauriceville in Orange. After two years, he moved to Orangefield High School as assistant head football coach.
In 2001, he became assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator at Sulphur Springs High School for three years. From there he moved to Abilene, where he was defensive coordinator at Cooper High School for two years.
Commerce chose Wells out of the 104 applications that were submitted. Wells hopes to bring Commerce back to the days when current Euless Trinity Head Coach Steve Lineweaver was there from 1993-1999. During that stretch, the Tigers were 83-14-2 and went 1-2 vs. Sealy in Class 3A Championship games. Sealy beat Commerce in 1995 and 1997 and Commerce won the state title in 1999.
