Here are the teams, pools, key players, stats and of course my predictions for the Denton State Qualifying Tournament.
Pool A: Denton, Arlington Lamar, Dallas Smith, Greenville
Arlington Lamar has already qualified as the Waco Midway SQT. Dallas Smith went 1-2 in their only other SQT while Greenville went 0-3. This will be Denton’s first SQT this year.
Mike's Pick: Denton
Pool B: Rockwall, Lake Dallas, Midlothian, Lewisville Hebron
This will be a great pool to watch!! Rockwall has gone 1-2 in SQT play this year including a 54-34 win over pool opponent Lake Dallas. I have picked Lake Dallas to win in two other SQT's this year but they have disappointed with a 3-4 record making it to the semifinals at the Frisco Liberty SQT. They have one of the best QB's in James Franklin and they have a previous win over pool opponent Lewisville Hebron (57-28). Midlothian has gone 2-4 in SQT play this year. Look for their big 6'3" WR Eddie Johnson to make plays. Lewisville Hebron has gone 5-5 this year making it to the semifinals at the Arlington Bowie SQT.
Mike's Pick: Lake Dallas (again)
Pool C: Arlington Sam Houston, Mesquite, DeSoto, Lewisville
Arlington Sam Houston has gone 2-4 this year with losses to some pretty good teams. Mesquite, last years runner up in the state championship will be making their first appearance and will bring lots of talent. QB Xavier Smith will have lots of targets like RB Robert Marshall and WR's Davian Harper, Aaron Richards and Brad Smithey. CB Mar'shauwn Grays will lead the Skeeter defense. DeSoto went 2-1 last week including a win over Austin Lake Travis. They will also have lots of talent like DB Adrian White, WR Darius Terrell, RB Marcus Murphy and LB Zachary Orr. Lewisville has gone 1-5 this year but you can never count them out when they are being coached by the only coach to win two 7-on-7 state championships in Dick Olin.
Mike's Pick: DeSoto
Pool D: Plano, Denton Guyer, Mansfield Legacy, Dallas Jesuit
Plano has gone 3-3 this year and will depend on WR Robert Robinson. Denton Guyer has gone 4-2 this year in SQT play and made it to the semifinals at the Frisco Liberty SQT but lost a heartbreaker to Richland 55-56. Mansfield Legacy has gone 1-2 in SQT play while Dallas Jesuit showed that they are a talented group making it to the Wylie SQT semifinals.
Mike's Pick: Denton Guyer
Semifinals:
Denton vs. Lake Dallas
DeSoto vs. Denton Guyer
Mike's Picks: Lake Dallas and Denton Guyer
Mike's Championship Pick: Denton Guyer
