After back to back 12-1 seasons Coach Darren Allman left for Austin Westlake. To read more about this go to:

Odessa Permian then went and found one of the most famous coaches in Texas to take over. The Panthers coach from 1986-1989, Gary Gaines. The same Gary Gaines who coached Odessa Permian when the Friday Night Lights book was written.

With only 22 lettermen and 7 starters coming back it will be hard to get another 12-1 season but with Gaines leading the way it might happen. Look for the Panthers to finish the regular season at 8-2 or 9-1 and make another run to the Area or Regional playoffs. They open up their season at the Kick Off Classic in San Antonio against Duncanville.
