Week 5 Highlights — Longview Wins Easily, Bronchos Best Team In Odessa
-
Updated: October 5, 2009
Games of the week:
Odessa 26, Odessa Permian 7
Odessa led by thier swarming defense (4 Ints for the game) held a 19-0 lead a halftime. Permian tightened it up to 19-7 early in the 3rd but Odessa settled down and got the victory. This was the 51st meeting between these two long-time rivals. Permian still holds a commanding 43-7-1 series lead.
Longview 45, Sulphur Springs 0
It was a showdown (or was supposed to be ) of the Current #1 team vs. the Pre-Season #1 team but Longview routed Sulphur Springs in front of a full house at Lobo Stadium. Longview extended their winning streak in district games to 30. They are now the front runners for the district 13-4A title after beating Texarkana last week. Longview rolled to 521 total yards of offense. What is even more impressive is that Longview's top two tailbacks didn't play. Tyler McCray and Da'Cedric Hunt didn't play because of disciplinary reasons. A big Lone star Gridiron salute goes out to coach John King for wanting to do what is right (sitting star players for disciplinary reason) instead of just saying dont do that again and now go help us win this big game. Sulphur Springs averaged 34.4 points per game coming in, but the Lobos limited the Wildcats to 212 total yards while running up and down the field for 521 yards on their own.
Graham 49, Bridgeport 48
Bridgeport led this one 42-35 going into the 4th quarter but Graham behind Quarterback Case McCoy took a 49-42 lead late in the game. Bridgeport was able to score a TD and went for the extra point to send the game into OT. Graham’s Ethan Hiser blocked the PAT though and Graham came away with a 49-48 win. McCoy had a spectacular night throwing for six touchdowns and 369 yards. The teams combined for 38 first downs and 992 yards of offense to go with the 14 touchdowns and 97 points.
