Coaching Changes — New Braunfels Canyon

New Braunfels Canyon has hired Matt Elliott to be their new athletic director and head coach. Elliott replaces Les Davis who was reassigned after leading the Cougars for the past six years.

Davis had a 40-25 record at New Braunfels Canyon and has an all-time record of 52-41-1. He went 27-7 in his first three seasons at Canyon making it to the Class 4A Division II state quarterfinals in 2005. The last three years have not been as good though. His teams went just 13-18 and they only won four district games over the final two seasons.

Elliott arrives at Canyon after being the San Antonio Southwest head coach for the last four seasons. He went 38-9 during that time which is an average of 9.5 wins per season. He also took them to the playoffs all 4 seasons. Until Elliott took over, San Antonio Southwest did not have eight or more wins in a season since 1998. Since 1960, Southwest had just three seasons with eight or more wins and just seven playoff appearances. He also coached at Springtown (2003-2005) where he had a 19-13 record. This gives him a career record of 57-22.

New Braunfels Canyon will be part of a good District 27-4A that includes Buda Hays, Kyle Lehman, Lockhart, San Antonio Alamo Heights, Schertz Clemens and Smithson Valley. Their rival game is against New Braunfels in the "Wurst Bowl". New Braunfels leads the all-time series 22-6.
