Updated: April 21, 2010
Corpus Christi West Oso has hired Joe Salinas as its new head coach and athletic director. Salinas will replace Mark Guess who has been the head coach for the last nine seasons with the Bears.
Guess was 48-48 in his nine seasons with the Bears but went 3-7 last year and missed the playoffs the past two seasons. He was previously an assistant coach at West Oso before becoming the head coach. Coach Guess will be taking over the athletic coordinator and head coaching responsibilities at Brownsville Veterans Memorial next season which is just opening. He leaves ranked #2 in all-time coaching wins at West Oso, only 1 win behind Ed Bacak.
Salinas spent the past three seasons at Class A Van Horn. He took over a team that was coming off a 1-8 season. He went just 2-8 in his first year but went 6-5 and 7-4 in 2008 and 2009 making the playoffs both years. His overall record was 15-17 during his three seasons. Before coaching at Van Horn, Salinas spent two seasons as the head coach at La Villa where he turned things around there also. La Villa went 0-10 the year before Salinas was hired. In his first year they went 7-5 and then went 11-1 the following season before he left for Van Horn. Before he became a head coach, Salinas spent time as an assistant coach at Edcouch-Elsa and Orange Grove.
The Bears will compete the next two seasons in District 31-3A with Corpus Christi Miller, Robstown, Orange Grove, Lyford and Raymondville.
