Coaching Changes — Round Rock McNeil

Round Rock McNeil has hired long time Hutto Head Coach Lee Penland as their next Head Coach. Penland will replace Robert Wilcox who stepped down at the end of the 2009 season.

Wilcox leaves with a 39-44 record in eight seasons with the Mavericks. His teams had two playoff appearances and one trip to the quarterfinals in 2004. The Mavericks were 2-8 though this year. Wilcox has a career record of 103-75 in 16 years.

Penland had been with Hutto since 1998 where he had a 68-59 record. Prior to coaching at Hutto, Coach Penland was the offensive coordinator at Austin Bowie (1997-98), offensive coordinator at Austin High School (1993-97), and the defensive coordinator at Austin Reagan (1992-93). Hutto played in three different classifications during Penland’s tenure. They reached the Class 3A, Division II championship game in 2005. Since moving up to 4A though they have gone 11-9 in 2 seasons and went 5-5 last season.

McNeil will be part of District 16-5A along with Georgetown, Leander, Pflugerville, Round Rock, Round Rock Stony Point and Round Rock Westwood. The wins in a season that the Mavericks have had over the last 9 years has been 7 (last time in 2004). They have only one 8+ win season in 18 year history (2000 8-3).
