Coach: Phillip Wiggins (4 years) 13-30-0 record at Vega; 13-30-0 all-time coaching record
Coaches Comments: Payson Bain will be the projected quarterback. He was an outstanding receiver last year. He needs to touch the ball each play. Jake Jones will be our running back and top returning linebacker. He sees the field really well. We should be very similar to our team in 2011. We lose key players but have good young players coming. District Outlook: Gruver should be the toughest team in our district. They have some key players returning on both sides of the ball. Claude also should be very competitive. They have a core group of kids returning as well
Returning Lettermen: 15
Returning Starters: Offense: 5 Defense: 7
Key Players:
* WR Payson Bain 1st Team All-District 787 receiving yards 15 TDs
* RB/LB Jake Jones DIST DEF MVP 658 yards 9 TDs rushing 83 tackles
* LB/WR Jacob Glasscock 1st Team All-District LB
* QB JR Bailey Boydstun
* DL Steven Scott
* WR/DB Adam Munoz
* OL/DL Matt Montgomery
Notes:
* On a 5 year losing streak going 16-37
- Mike Says: The Longhorns started off rough last season going 1-7 before winning their last 2 district games to win district and get a first round playoff bye. Pre-District games against Booker and Wellington will let them know where they stand this year. WR Bain and RB/LB Jones will be the leaders on the team. Look for them to go 6-4 or 5-5 this year and the district will be a fight between them, Claude and Gruver.
- Chris Says: This is one of those districts where 2 wins gets you into the playoffs and for that reason, Vega should be playoff bound. Coach Phillip Wiggins' Longhorns are not afraid to play some tough game prior to district and will be battle tested by the time it is for the 2-1A Division II Championship. Expect Payson Bain to make a bigger impact this year as he moves over to QB and Jake Jones will continue to make plays on both sides of the ball. They may not win more than 5 games, but they should see postseason plan.
