Notes:
* Have now made it to the state semifinals 2 years in a row falling to Tyler Chapel Hill both times
* They have a new head coach this year.
- Mike Says: The Roughnecks will have to replace a great senior class and a head coach this season. Bess is a good runner who will head up the offense. The defense is strong and will be led by LB Thomas, DB Johnson and DL Cotten. Look for them to go 8-2 or 9-1 in the regular season and fight La Marque for the district title. Once in the playoffs, they should go 2 or 3 rounds.
- Chris Says: La Marque dropping into District 24-3A with so many of their talented players returning has to concern West Columbia. New head coach, Randy Lynch has a lot going for him though as he begins his head coaching career. Lynch was the Roughnecks offensive coordinator. He has also been an assistant at Brazoswood and Sweeny. He knows this district and he knows his players . Floyd Bess, and his 1,245 yards rushing last season, will provide a dependable anchor to the offense at running back. Linebacker Broderick Thomas, DB Willis Johnson and DL Jerry Wayne Cotten each notched over 90 tackles last season and will provide leadership for young players stepping up. It is unlikely they will beat La Marque for the district title, but with it being the last regular season game, and both teams coming in with great district records, expect it to be standing-room-only. In that kind of environment, anything can happen.
