Port Lavaca Calhoun at Corpus Christi Calallen: Calallen 48-0
Last season, Port Lavaca Calhoun shut out Corpus Christi Calallen to take control of District 30-4A. Calallen returned the favor in a surprising comfortable victory as its defense took over in a 48-0 victory over Calhoun to end Calhoun’s 27-game regular season winning-streak. Calallen quarterback Derek Scheible threw for 255 yards and four touchdowns while adding 91 yards rushing and another score to lead the offense for Calallen, who stays perfect at 4-0 this season. Calhoun’s high-powered rushing attack was held to 162 yards on 41 carries and Calhoun did not complete a pass on the night. Quarterback Hunter Boerm and Cory Williams combined for 151 yards in a losing effort for the Sandcrabs. Calhoun fell to 4-1 on the season.
Mercedes at Mission Veterans: Mercedes 36-35
It has been a long road this season for Mercedes after losing starting quarterback Isaiah Garza for the season in a tragic auto accident. After being shutout twice already this season, new quarterback Rene Presas did everything possible to get his team back in the win column by throwing for 451 yards and four touchdowns in an upset win over Mission Veterans, 36-35. Mercedes lost a 22-point lead but won the game when Presas hit Josh Garza on a 19-yard touchdown pass to tie the game with :08 left and Samuel Moran booted through the go-ahead point after. Garza finished with 304 yards and seven catches. Junior quarterback Santos Villarreal threw for 296 yards and added 210 yards rushing to lead the way for Mission Veterans (3-1).
Raymondville at Rio Hondo: Raymondville 41-30
Raymondville needed two fourth quarter touchdowns in a come-from-behind victory over Rio Hondo in non-district action, 41-30. Raymondville quarterback Guillermo Esparza led his team back from a 30-7 deficit. Esparza’s 50-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Akers put the Bearkats in front with 3:44 remaining. Jesse Valladares added a 4-yard touchdown run to put the game away for Raymondville. Romeo Rosales rushed for 134 yards to lead Raymondville (3-2). Eli Pitones threw for three touchdowns to lead Rio Hondo (2-3), while Isaiah Valladarez hauled in four passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns.
Sweeny at Edna: Sweeny 51-47
Sweeny got back into the win column moving to 4-1 on the season after outlasting Edna in non-district action, 51-47. Dorland Fields rushed for 228 yards and four touchdowns on 10 carries to lead the way for Sweeny (4-1). Fields scored on runs of 42, 64, and 55 yards in the first quarter alone, while Anthony Simmons rushed for 122 yards to pace Sweeny. Edna (2-2) was led by a 149-yard, four-touchdown effort by Marquis Broussard, while Austin Kelley rushed for three touchdowns.
Cuero at Ingleside: Cuero 16-14
Pearson Reese booted a 38-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to give a Cuero a 16-14 victory over Ingleside. D’Anthony Hopkins rushed for 128 yards to lead the way for Cuero (4-1). After the score was tied at seven at halftime, Cuero took the lead on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Brendan Pupi to Jared Verner. Tristen Barajas threw for 154 yards and a touchdown in a losing effort for Ingleside (3-2), while Terrance Robinson caught five passes for 89 yards.
