Week 6
On Thursday night, many eyes in the Austin metro were on this enticing District 17-4A encounter. In a game worthy of the pregame hype, Elgin turned away Manor 48-41. For Elgin, dial up the usually potent combo of the Simmons brothers. Da’Trean Simmons rushed for 201 yards and five touchdowns, while quarterback Te’Rel Simmons rushed for 174 yards and a pair of touchdowns as their ground attack to turn away the Mustangs. Elgin remained unbeaten at 6-0 while moving its district mark to 3-0. Tyrone Owens rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns to lead Manor (5-1, 2-1 in 17-4A). Jamal Collins twice hit Datrin Guyton for touchdowns through the air, while Collins scored on 1-yard run to help tie the game at 41 before Elgin came through.
Round Rock Westwood at Pflugerville Hendrickson: Hendrickson, 58-37
Pflugerville Hendrickson turned to a relentless running game to remain unbeaten at 7-0 with a 58-37 victory over Round Rock Westwood. Hendrickson pounded its way to 667 rushing yards on 44 carries. Emerging junior Tazh Maloy used his lightning speed to run for 277 yards and five touchdowns in the victory, yet did not lead his team in rushing. Oklahoma commit Samaje Perine rushed for 282 yards and two touchdowns. Houston verbal Bear Fenimore threw for 372 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Travis Wilde caught five passes for 132 yards and a touchdown for Westwood (3-4, 2-1). Westwood is a team to watch despite its 3-4 record moving forward with losses to Austin Bowie, Lake Travis, Cedar Park, and now Hendrickson on the resume’.
Cameron Yoe at Lago Vista: Lago Vista, 27-20
Lago Vista has officially become the giant-killer of the 2013 season. The Vikings, who defeated Refugio earlier this season, this time downed a Cameron Yoe team at the top of many 2A rankings, 27-20. A strong running game and stingy defense did Lago Vista proud once again as it moves to 3-3 on the season. Dawson Hernandez rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way, while Eriq Mitchell added 120 yards on nine carries as Lago Vista rushed for 403 yards. Jason Kopriva, who led Yoe to the 2A-Division I state championship last season, threw for 197 yards to lead the way for the Yoeman. Cameron Yoe falls to 5-1 and 2-1 in District 13-2A-I play for the season.
San Antonio Madison at San Antonio Reagan: Reagan, 36-23
San Antonio Reagan is for real. Reagan moved to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in District 26-5A with a 36-23 victory over San Antonio Madison. Reagan quarterback Ty Summers, a Rice commit who has led his team to an average of 47.2 points per game this season, rushed for 257 yards and three touchdowns to lead his team back from a 23-21 halftime deficit. Summers also threw for 167 yards and a touchdown to Kash Knudson, who finished with 100 receiving yards on five receptions. San Antonio Madison quarterback Cody Ennis threw for 235 yards and a touchdown to junior Ja’Michael Brown. Brown opened the game on a 92-yard kickoff return to pay dirt while Texas Tech commit Byron Daniels had nine receptions for 136 yards to pace Madison (5-2, 2-1 in 26-5A).
La Vernia at Pleasanton: La Vernia, 32-25
La Vernia claimed a vital District 28-3A road victory over previously-unbeaten Pleasanton, 32-25. It appeared La Vernia was going to roll towards a blowout victory early on as the Bears stormed out to an early 25-0 lead with 6:58 remaining in the second quarter. Colby Skelton threw for three first half touchdowns and finished with 137 passing yards to lead the way for La Vernia (6-1, 1-0 in District 28-3A). Grant Jackson kick started the comeback with two rushing touchdowns, while quarterback Jacob Arevalo threw for two touchdowns and added 126 rushing yards to lead the way for Pleasanton. Both teams have yet to face district foe Somerset (5-1, 1-0 in District 28-3A), who is led by rocket-armed quarterback Koy Detmer Jr.
Copperas Cove at Hewitt Midway: Midway, 42-39 (OT)
Hewitt Midway kicker Leo Peralta drilled a 26-yard field goal in overtime to earn a 42-39 over Copperas Cove. Midway, who moves to 5-1 and 3-0 in 8-5A, was led by quarterback Ben Hicks. Hicks threw for 334 passing yards and totaled two touchdowns, while Eric Clayburn rushed for 157 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Copperas Cove (3-3, 1-2 in 8-5A) was led by a stellar performance from quarterback Manny Harris, who threw for 532 yards and two touchdowns to help his team erase a 32-10 halftime deficit. Phillip Baptiste was the go-to target for Harris, reeling in 175 yards on 15 receptions for Copperas Cove.
Lorena at Waco Connally: Connally, 34-28
Waco Connally stopped Lorena quarterback Harris Coleman start on fourth down with 1:19 remaining to claim a 34-28 victory in a crucial 17-3A encounter. The Cadets moved to 5-1 on the season behind Josh Terrell, who rushed for 141 yards with all three of his touchdown runs coming in the first half. Chris Robinson rushed for two touchdowns to pace Connally, including a 68-yard run. Coleman rushed for 116 tough yards and had a passing and rushing touchdown in a losing effort for 5-1 Lorena. Andrew Marrero and Duggan Burch rushed for touchdowns to pace Lorena.
