Game of the Week (Wk 5 2013) – #17 3A Gainesville Leopards (4-0) @ NR 3A at Vernon Lions (5-0)

Gainesville leads this all-time series 8-6 including a 14-13 victory last year.
2013 Schedules:
Gainesville:
vs Burkburnett (2-3) (W 45-23)

vs Springtown (1-4) (W 41-18)
vs Lake Worth (3-2) (W 28-10)

at Breckenridge (1-4) (W 48-3)

Mike Says: Both of these teams take the air out of the ball. Gainesville averages over 250 yards per game rushing while Vernon averages a whopping 369.8 yards per game. Along with strong running games, they both play good defense. The Gainesville defense is led by DB Jonathan Mendez (40 tackles) while the Vernon defense is led by DB Corrie Luster (65 tackles). This is a tough one but the LEOPARDS win 21-20!!
Chris Says: I think Gainesville is a little more tested this season as the only winning team Vernon played was Childress. This will be an important game for both squads as they will know a lot more about themselves after this one ends. Vernon is putting up more points, but again, I think Gainesville has had stronger opponents. The LEOPARDS take this one 35-28!!
LSG Intern Zach Says: Coin flip here between two teams getting their first real challenge of the season. All eyes will be on running backs Adam Berryman and Orlando Haymon. Gainesville’s Berryman has over 500 yards to go with nine touchdowns to lead the Leopards. But as good as he’s been, Vernon’s Haymon is in a class of his own. The senior already has 912 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on just 55 carries, adding three fumble recoveries and two sacks on defense. I like him to continue to carry the Lions at home. Lions 42-35.
LSG Intern William Says: Both teams have been dominant so far this season so this game should be a shootout. Vernon has averaged 41.6 points per game and have been led by their senior running backs Orlando Haymon and Danny Valverde who account for the majority of Vernon's 369.8 rushing yards per game. For Gainesville their defensive is the force of this football team giving up 13.25 points per game. This defense is led by defensive back Lilton Moore who has 3 of the teams 6 interceptions. However, interceptions won’t slow down this rushing attack, I give this Lions rushing attack the edge. Lions win 32-20.
LSG Writer Scott Says: Gainesville’s bruising fullback Adam Berryman has bulldozed his way to nine rushing scores this season as his team comes in having won 16 of its last 17 games. Vernon is off to a fast start thanks largely to the breakout season by Orlando Haymon. Haymon has been flat-out insane this season, rushing for 912 yards and 13 touchdowns at 16.6 yards per carry. The Lions could make an emphatic statement by moving to 6-0. Vernon lost 14-13 last year and gets the job done in 2013, winning 33-30.
