Mike Says: This one is not only for the district championship, it will also set up who will be the favorite to win the state championship. In our pre-season predictions, we have these two playing again in the Quarterfinals with Wellington winning it on their way to their first ever state championship. Things have not changed much with the Skyrockets being our current #1 teams and the Kiowas at #5. This game will feature two of Class 1A's best quarterbacks as Wellington QB Klark Ashmore and Booker QB JR Hunter Lile lead their teams. It will be one to watch. You would think this might be one to burn out the scoreboard but Wellingtons defense is also very good, giving up less than 10 points per game. The SKYROCKETS win it 34-21!!
Chris Says: This is what a Game of the Week is all about! Two solid teams - both in contention for a state title - both undefeated in district - both set to fight it out tooth and nail. Booker's Hunter Lile makes any game a likely win, but he is going up against a defense the likes of which he has not seen this year. Booker may not lose another game until they match up again in the playoffs, but this time I think they're going down. SKYROCKETS hold strong and win 30-18!!
LSG Intern Zach Says: #5 Booker (6-1) (1-0) @ #1 Wellington (7-0) (1-0): Lot to like about Booker. Junior quarterback Hunter Lile will own just about every major passing record in the state by the time he is done, and his favorite wideout Jared Reagan will enjoy similar success. Are those two enough to keep the Kiowas within reach of Wellington? I think not. It’d be one thing if the Skyrockets were just a great offense, but they are almost, if not equally, as good on defense. They have scored at least 42 each of their past six games, and have allowed their opponents into double-figures only twice. As good as the Kiowas are, even they will have to play a perfect game to knock off 1A’s best. Skyrockets 49-21.
LSG Intern William Says: Somehow the Wellington Skyrockets continue to amaze me with the balanced offensive scheme that they have. Senior quarterback Klark Ashmore is highly efficient completing 72% of his passes for 1395 yards, 18 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. His right-hand man in the backfield is senior running back who averages 17.9 yards per carry and just less than 200 yards per game and also has 23 total touchdowns this season (20 rushes). For Booker junior quarterback Hunter Lile does it all. He has thrown for 2231 yards and 20 touchdowns, and also leads his team with 10 rushing touchdowns. Wellington is the better balanced team and also has twice as many sacks (9 to 17) as the Booker defense. Skyrockets win 38-28.
LSG Writer Scott Says: As Hunter Lile goes, so does Booker. The junior quarterback has complied a solid campaign with 2,231 passing yards and 30 total touchdowns. Jared Reagan is Lile’s top target. The junior has hit the century mark in receiving yards in every game this season and has 87 receptions. He could easily surpass the 100-catch mark this season having not caught less than 10 passes in a game thus far. Wellington quarterback Klark Ashmore is no slouch with his 18 touchdown passes this season. Terry Gilbreath has 1,378 yards and 20 touchdowns rushing on 77 carries, a whopping average of 17.9 yards per carry. Wellington has too much firepower, but it should be a classic encounter. Wellington, 41-35.
