Week 6
CC Ray at Alice: Alice, 65-46
Alice only completed one pass but pounded its way to 530 rushing yards to hand Corpus Christi Ray its first loss of the season, 65-46. Oscar Montalvo rushed for 169 yards and four touchdowns while Joseph Cantu sprinted to 152 yards and three scores to lead the effort for the Coyotes (5-1, 2-1 in 31-4A). CC Ray quarterback Matthew Merino threw for 411 yards and four touchdowns and added 107 more yards and another rushing score for the Texans. Armando Garza caught seven passes for 181 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Ben Brooks chipped in with 160 receiving yards and two touchdowns to pace CC Ray (5-1, 2-1 in 31-4A).
McAllen Memorial at McAllen Rowe: Memorial, 35-28 (OT)
McAllen Memorial sensational sophomore running back Trevor Speights continues to impress as his team turned away McAllen Rowe in overtime, 35-28. Speights rushed for 255 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries to lead the way for Memorial. With the score knotted at 28 after regulation, Memorial (3-3, 2-2 in 31-5A) quarterback Jonathan Sanchez connected on his second complete pass of the night to DJ Johnson from 25 yards out in overtime to claim the victory. Rowe (2-5, 1-4 in 31-5A) quarterback Hector Bosquez threw for three touchdowns in a losing effort, including a 55-yard dagger to Jay Alonzo to force overtime. Alonzo caught six passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns and added a team-high 61 rushing yards on just two carries for Rowe.
Victoria East at Victoria West: Victoria West, 47-43
In a game worthy of instant classic status, Victoria West spurned a potential major upset against vaunted rival Victoria East 47-43. Victoria East stormed out to a 21-7 lead at halftime behind the steady play of quarterback Jonathan Ortega. Victoria West scored 19 unanswered points in the third before chaos ensured in a memorable fourth quarter. West scored on a 9-yard touchdown run by Zevaughn Shelton with :51 remaining to claim the victory. Anthony Navarro threw for 213 yards, rushed for 67 yards, and totaled three touchdowns while Shelton finished with 109 yards and three touchdowns for West (5-1, 2-0 in 30-4A). Ortega threw for 214 yards and added 96 rushing while Laken Williams rushed for 129 to pace East (2-4, 1-2 in 30-4A).
Roma at Mission High: Roma, 31-22
Roma running back Orlando Solis is working his way towards a repeat All-State selection as the senior running back rumbled his way to 301 rushing yards as Roma turned away Mission High, 31-22. Solis rushed for three touchdowns, including a 68-yard run to help tie the score at 22 heading into the fourth quarter. RJ Garza hit Aldo Ramirez on a 23-yard go-ahead score for Roma (3-3, 1-2 in District 32-4A). Jerry Barrera rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown to lead Mission (2-3, 1-2 in 32-4A).
Rio Hondo at La Feria: Rio Hondo, 40-28
Rio Hondo pounded its way to 429 rushing yards to turn away La Feria, 40-28. Rio Hondo stormed used three long touchdown runs to claim to a 21-0 lead at halftime. Junior quarterback Eli Pitones led the ground attack with 167 yards and two touchdowns, including runs of 80 and 66 yards. Pitones added 162 passing yards and a touchdown for the Bobcats. Marco Garate added 144 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Emilio Martinez rushed for 119 yards and chipped in with a touchdown for Rio Hondo (3-4, 1-0 in District 32-3A). La Feria quarterback Eric Cuervo did all he could to lead his team on a furious comeback in the second half and finished 17 of 28 passing for 303 yards and two touchdowns. Armando Garza rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns to pace La Feria.
Ingleside at Sinton: Ingleside, 35-23
Despite being outgained 405-252 in total offense, Ingleside had enough to turn away hosts Sinton 35-23 in what was featured as the statewide DQ Big Game of the Week for Week 6. The steady hand of Tristen Barajas threw for 135 yards and a touchdown to lead the way, while Jalen Gross, Kyle Hernandez, and Christian Britt all ran for touchdowns for Ingleside (4-2, 1-0 in 30-3A). Sinton junior quarterback Tyler Handson threw for 153 yards and rushed for 111 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way for Sinton (4-2, 0-1 in 30-3A).
Donna at Edinburg Vela: Donna, 16-13 (2 OT)
After a field goal kicking battle over four quarters of regulation, Donna did enough in a pair of overtime sessions to turn away upstart Edinburg Vela, 16-13. Donna’s Pedro Garcia and Vela’s Raymond Partida traded field goals as the score was 6-6 entering the first overtime session. Vela took a 13-6 lead immediately as Ebher Lopez scored on a 25-yard run for the first touchdown of the game. Donna’s Aldo Silva answered with a 10-yard touchdown run force a second overtime. Neither team found the end zone again, but Garcia drilled his third field goal of the night from 35 yards to win it in the second overtime. Donna moves to 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in District 30-5A with the victory, while Vela falls to 4-3 on the season and 3-2 in district play after not winning a game in its inaugural season in 2012.
