Week 7

Weslaco High at Weslaco East: Weslaco High, 35-21

In ‘Tinaco Bowl II’ Weslaco High erased a 21-20 deficit in the final four minutes of the contest to turn away rival Weslaco East, 35-21. Javier Galvan scored on a 2-yard run to put Weslaco High ahead for good with 3:32 remaining. Eric Gonzalez rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way for Weslaco High, who moved to 6-1 on the season and 5-0 in District 31-5A with the victory. Saul Cuellar led Weslaco East (4-3, 3-2 in District 31-5A) with 100 yards and a touchdown.

Rio Grande City at Mission: Rio Grande City, 35-32

Noe Gonzalez III busted loose for the go-ahead touchdown on an 80-yard run with 3:06 remaining to give Rio Grande City a 35-32 victory over Mission. Gonzalez finished with 154 rushing yards and three touchdowns and chipped in with 133 passing yards and another pair of scores to lead Rio Grande City (3-4, 3-1 in District 32-4A). Mission quarterback Jerry Barrera threw for 196 yards and a score while picking up 105 rushing yards and a touchdown for Mission, who fell to 2-4 on the season with a 1-3 record in district play.

Santa Rosa at Falfurrias: Santa Rosa, 23-7

Santa Rosa remained unbeaten in 16-2A Division 1 by relying on its defense to claim a 23-7 victory over Falfurrias. Adrian Canales hit Ivan Salazar on a 63-yard touchdown pass :17 into the game and then followed it up with a 20-yard interception return for a score less than a minute later to give Santa Rosa an early 14-0 lead. Wally Olivarez rushed for 112 yards to lead Santa Rosa. Darren Saenz rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown to lead a spirited effort from Falfurrias, who fell to 5-3 on the season and 1-3 in the district play.

Victoria West at Port Lavaca Calhoun: Calhoun, 62-21

Port Lavaca Calhoun pounded its way to 609 rushing yards in a 62-21 victory over Victoria West. Brandon Smithwick rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns to lead three Sandcrabs who hit the century mark in rushing. Fullback Jakorious Williams rushed for 133 yards and three touchdowns while junior Elijah Velasquez rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown to pace Calhoun (7-1, 3-1 in District 30-4A). Anthony Navarro rushed threw for 135 yards and a touchdown and added 88 rushing yards, while Zevaughn Shelton rushed for 102 yards for Victoria West (5-2, 2-1 in 30-4A).

Sinton at Orange Grove: Sinton, 35-27

Quarterback Tyler Handson rushed for 310 yards and five touchdowns as Sinton turned away Orange Grove, 35-27. Handson hit paydirt on runs of 1, 18, 25, 64, and 14 yards out, his final two runs breaking open a 21-19 game in the fourth quarter. Orange Grove quarterback Hondo Harris threw for 339 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way, while Matthew Priddy caught 10 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown.
