Gulf Coast Week 8 Roundup
Weslaco East at McAllen Memorial: Weslaco East, 63-56
Quarterback Darren Rivas hit Gilbert Urbina on a 37-yard touchdown strike with 37 seconds remaining to give Weslaco East a 63-56 shootout victory over McAllen Memorial in District 31-5A action. Saul Cuellar rushed for 342 yards and five touchdowns to lead the way for Weslaco East (5-3, 4-2 in 31-5A), while Rivas chipped in with 167 yards and a pair of scores to go along with 172 passing yards and two touchdowns. McAllen Memorial’s sophomore sensation Trevor Speights rushed for 289 yards and five touchdowns to lead his team in a losing effort. Joel Alonzo chipped in with 210 yards and two touchdowns as Memorial (4-4, 3-3 in 31-5A) rushed for 612 yards. The two teams produced one of the most astonishing statistics in the state in Week 8, combining for 1,124 rushing yards.
Brownsville Veterans at Los Fresnos: Los Fresnos, 38-22
Los Fresnos continued its push towards the playoffs with a 38-22 victory over Brownsville Veterans. Javier Cruz completed 13 of 20 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns for the Falcons, while 6’4 Division I recruiting target Brandon Colon hauled in five passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. Cruz added 157 yards and two touchdowns on the ground for Los Fresnos (6-2, 5-1 in District 32-5A). Led by Marcus Castillo, Veterans Memorial held the lead for most of the first half. Castillo threw for 144 yards and two touchdowns for the Chargers, who fell to 4-5 on the season and 3-4 in district play. Zeke Marks caught five passes for 106 yards and a touchdown to pace Veterans Memorial.
CC Ray at CC Flour Bluff: Flour Bluff, 49-7
In a highly anticipated encounter in Corpus Christi, CC Flour Bluff comfortably disposed of CC Ray 49-7 to take command of District 31-4A. Reidel Clayton scored on runs of 74 and 75 yards in the first half and finished with a game-high 269 yards on 14 carries for the Hornets, who remain atop the district standings at 5-0 over Alice and moved to 7-1 on the campaign. Cody Brewer added two second half touchdown passes and added another on the ground for Flour Bluff. Tristan Barrera rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown to lead the way for Ray.
CC Calallen at Victoria West: Calallen, 56-38
CC Calallen remained unbeaten behind a stellar performance from Derek Scheible in a 56-38 victory over Victoria West, 56-38. Scheible completed 11 of 14 passes for 304 yards and four touchdowns and added 146 rushing yards and three touchdowns for the Wildcats. Chase Whetsel took both of his receptions to pay dirt covering 162 yards, both in the second quarter. Zevaughn Shelton rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns for Victoria West, who fell to 5-3 on the season and 2-2 in District 30-4A. Gamarquis Girdy caught six passes for 115 yards and a touchdown to pace West.
Refugio at Banquete: Refugio, 55-7
It sounds like a broken record over the past three Texas high school football seasons, but Refugio quarterback Travis Quintanilla continues to compile statistics worth mentioning on a national level. In a 55-7 victory over Banquete, Quintanilla completed 16 of 25 passes for 358 yards and four touchdowns. For the season, Quintanilla has thrown for 2,388 yards and 27 touchdowns compared to just one interception while completing 69.7 percent of his passes. Over his career, Quintanilla has completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 10,990 yards and 144 touchdowns.
