Texas High School Football Roundup for the Houston Area
Texas City Rolls Pearland Dawson: Led by their explosive offense and a strong defensive effort in the second half, the Texas City Stingarees made our Game of the Week a blowout. D’Onta Foreman was solid as usual carrying the ball, rushing for a score to close the second quarter. The big tailback also added a 15-yard receiving touchdown. But in this game, it was twin Armanti who led the way on both sides of the ball. The speedy senior had three interceptions (returning one for a score) to go along with 148 rushing yards and two touchdowns. In total, 400 of Texas City’s 465 yards came on the ground as they held Pearland Dawson to just 50 yards in the final two frames.
Hightower Stays Perfect in District: Continuing their impressive rebound season, Fort Bend Hightower edged Fort Bend Austin 24-22 to remain perfect in District 23-5A. After a gaffe on a one-yard punt, the Hurricanes needed an onside kick and first-down run from Khalil Williams to seal the victory. At 3-2, Padriac McGinnis’ squad is not a world-beat but looks much better than the 5-5 group that missed the playoffs last season. The Hurricanes play Forth Bend Clements next week at home.
Bulmer Goes Nuts For Dulles: The Fort Bend Dulles Vikings have a star in the making by the name of Remus Bulmer. The shifty all-purpose back went for 334 yards and four touchdowns in a 47-27 victory over Fort Bend Clements. It was the second time Bulmer has gone over 250 yards on the ground as he starts to make a name for himself in 5A. He and Vikings will face Fort Bend Elkins at home this Thursday.
Oak Ridge Emerging in 4A: In just its third season, Ridge Point is looking like a major player after a big win over Fort Bend Marshall. The Panther defense contained Marshall’s dual-threat J.W. Ketchum, while the offense made all the necessary plays throughout the game. Prior to the game, Marshall looked like a favorite in District 22-4A. Now the Panthers are sitting pretty at 2-0 after their statement win with a favorable remaining schedule. This is definitely a sleeper to monitor come playoff time.
Pearland is the Real Deal: With Houston Katy, Westfield, North Shore and Houston Lamar all idle this weekend, Pearland was front and center. The Oilers did not disappoint, crushing Sam Rayburn by a score of 62-0. Running back JaColbie Butler had his way with the Texans, racking up 178 yards and four touchdowns on only five carries. The area is loaded with some of the best programs in 5A, and the Oilers are certainly among the best of them. Unfortunately, we likely won't get to see how they stack up until the postseason.
Jersey Village Upsets Cypress Creek: You can always count on district play to thin out the herd, and Cypress Creek has been cut from the top after a loss to Jersey Village. The Falcons limped into the game at 1-3, but were able to knock off the home team 35-28 in one of the more shocking upsets of the 5A season. Whether the Cougars were suffering a hangover after beating Cypress Springs the week before or simply looked past the Falcons is unknown. Expect them to bounce back this Saturday against Langham Creek.
