Defense Preserves Texas City’s Perfect Record: The talk all season surrounding Texas City has been its explosive offense. This week the Stings needed a late defensive stand to preserve their 45-37 win over Friendswood. Francois Bonilla registered a sack and a QB pressure on the Mustangs’ final drive, sealing a 6-0 start for the surging Stings. This offense, led by Armanti and D’Onta Foreman, will put up great numbers on weekly basis. But if this defense can continue to get key stops, there is no reason this program cannot have a perfect regular season.
Tristian Houston Powers North Shore Past PA Memorial: While we’re talking about teams that can go undefeated, how about North Shore? The Mustangs traveled to Port Arthur Memorial, one of their few remaining challenges, and flat-out dominated. The Mustangs racked up 590 rushing yards in the 49-20, with Tristian Houston going for 266 and four touchdowns. The junior had scoring runs of 64, 33, 49 and 34 yards during his field day on the road. It seems weird to say, but North Shore has been quietly one of the best teams in the area. The Mustangs have not allowed more than 20 points in a game this season, and will be interesting come playoff time.
Cy-Fair Overcoming Odds in 17-5A: So far this season, the Cy-Fair Bobcats have had to deal with the loss of their starting tailback and a change under center. And they keep winning. Following a 20-0 beatdown from Cy-Ridge, Ed Pustejovsky made the switch to Clayton Kopecky and the team has scored 72 through two games. In this week’s 30-23 win over Cy-Woods, Kopecky threw two touchdowns while Dillon Birden rushed for 210 yards and two scores of his own. Their season finale against Cypress Creek becomes the district’s biggest game, and you have to like the direction these Bobcats are heading.
Atascocita Wins a Wild (Weird) One: There were nine turnovers, a 15-second game-winning drive and a final field in Atascocita’s 31-29 victory over Klein Oak. The Eagles looked to be running away with it, getting up 28-13 after a 57-yard touchdown reception by Taylor Stump. Then Klein Oak’s Larenzo Stewart scored two of his three touchdowns to put the Panthers up 29-28 late. The Panthers had a chance to run the clock out, but were forced to punt with 15 seconds left. Thanks to a good return and a personal foul penalty, Caleb Bubel was able to hit the game-winning 43-yarder as time expired. It remains Westfield then everyone else in this district, but you can never get enough of the wild ones.
