Texas High School Football Roundup for the Houston Area
Week 8
Elkins Knocks Off Bush in Wire-to-Wire Victory: The battle for first place in District 23-5A started off as blowout. Then Fort Bend Bush decided to make a game of it. Down 23-0 early to Fort Bend Elkins, Ronald Monroe and replacement Kasey Poole combined to score 23 of the game’s next 30 points. A 30-yard touchdown by Jonathan Giles ultimately proved to be the difference, with Poole getting tackled on a last gash rush from the 21-yard line. Giles was the star with 133 rushing yards along with 196 through the air. A 2-5 Fort Bend Travis and 3-5 Fort Bend Austin are all that stands between the Knights and a district title.
Oak Ridge Routed by A&M Consolidated: Conroe Oak Ridge was on upset alert all week and Kobe Miller followed through on the threat with one of his best games of the season. Two-loss A&M Consolidated has been a tough out all season, with four games that have been decided by less than a touchdown. The Tigers jumped on the War Eagles with two first-quarter touchdowns, then iced it with a 20-point third. Miller was superb, completing 22 of his 26 passes for 316 yards and five touchdowns. Kerry Thomas was uncoverable all night, racking up 10 catches for 169 yards and two touchdowns. With Oak Ridge falling, The Woodlands is on cruise control in District 14.
Friendswood All But Eliminates Dawson: What seemed like a two-man race in District 24-4A has become all Texas City. Pearland Dawson, the Stings’ chief competition, needed a lot of help to jump back into first-place in the district and could now miss the playoffs altogether. The Eagles were upset on the road at Friendswood, giving up 28 third-quarter points. Demarcus Felton did everything he could to save Dawson’s season, rushing for a 229 yards and a touchdown. But aside from Felton’s big day, the Mustang defense was stifling in scoring on a fumble and stopping Dawson three times on fourth and short.
Dekaney’s Felton Runs Wild in Tough Loss: For the second-straight week, Spring Dekaney has suffered a tough district loss in a one-possession game. At least they can be proud of their senior running back Demarcus Felton. The Texas Tech commit carried the ball 44 times for a ridiculous 371 yards, 95 of which coming on his lone touchdown of the night. Unfortunately, it was not enough to hold off Klein, which scored the game-winning touchdown with 1:17 to play
