Lago Vista – the Giant Killers?

Updated: October 16, 2013
Cameron Yoe became the latest undefeated powerhouse to fall to upset-minded Lago Vista.
Call them giant-killers, landmines or whatever else you’d like. Just don’t these Lago Vista Vikings scared.
After knocking off powerhouse Cameron Yoe 27-20, the Vikes have now beaten two of our top-five 2A programs this season. Their first victim was Refugio in Week 2, outlasting the Bobcats in a 45-39 shootout.
The Yoemen and Bobcats have a lot in common. They are two of the best programs in all of the state, have two record-setting quarterbacks and are both in contention for a state title. Now they can add a loss to that list. Not to mention that both would be undefeated if not for these pesky Vikings.
And it’s safe to say neither saw it coming. The Bobcats hosted Lago Vista fresh off a 21-7 loss to Grandview only to watch their 62-game winning streak get snapped on the last play of the game. The Yoemen traveled to Sismore Stadium expecting a 2-3 cupcake and got shut out in the second half.
How have the Vikings pulled off these massive upsets? First, they are keeping these high-powered offenses off the field with a dominant run game. But most importantly, they have won the fourth quarter by a ridiculous 36-6 margin.
Had Alan Haire’s squad been able to pull off a similar upset over McGregor or Troy, we could be talking about one of the best teams in 2A right now. After all, we did have this team as one of our preseason top-20. Instead we will be left wondering just how dangerous this team could have been in the playoffs. You can bet nobody else in the conference wanted to be next on the list.
For all the amazing football Lago Vista has played against the top teams, its a shame that they find themselves now on the outside looking in.
