Playoffs week Four
REGIONAL FINALS
Icy conditions and bitter cold plagued this weekend’s Texas High School playoffs with numerous games in North and West Texas being postponed until Monday night, creating a potential recruiting/evaluation bonanza for college coaches , who will be on the road that day. SE Texas, Central Texas, and Greater Houston didn’t get the ice, so many of those games were played on schedule.
HOUSTON:
In what was supposed to be the top matchup in Greater Houston, Katy showed why they are the odds on favorite to win 5A-D2 with a resounding 56-14 win over Manvel. Junior Rodney Anderson (A&M commit) rushed for 247 yards and scored four touchdowns as the Tigers claimed Region III.
ON Saturday, three upsets featured play. Pearland knocked off Cy Fair 10-3 despite 152 yards rushing from Dillon Birden. Pearland Dawson was shocked in 4A by Stratford 38-7, as Terrance Peters ran for 139 yards and two scores. Brenham shutout unbeaten George Ranch 35-0 despite a 160 yard receiving performance by Ranch’s Xavian Marks.
DFW:
Ennis and Mesquite Poteet beat the weather by playing on Thursday night and the Lions were victorious 43-21. Allen was the only 4/5A team in action on Saturday, traveling to Austin to beat Spring Westfield 48-13. Kyle Murray totaled 352 yards and five touchdowns on a cold and wintry day.,
Most games were postponed to Monday night. Desoto and Euless Trinity was the headliner and didn’t disappoint. Desoto coach Claude Mathis instructed his defense to let Trinity score a go ahead td with 2:31 to play. The ploy allowed Desoto to go on offense and the Eagles drove the length of the field with Larry Nixon crashing over from the one yard line with just six seconds remaining and a 48-41 victory. Cedar Hill beat Denton Ryan 52-28 as Larry Hill rushed for 127 and four touchdowns. Denton Guyer advanced, beating Birdville 53-28. Jerrod Heard completed 11/14 for 135 and rushed for 212 yards and two scores to lead Guyer. Highland Park edged Wylie 27-14 and Argyle advanced in Class 3A with a 42-8 win over Gladewater.
CENTRAL TEXAS:
San Antonio Brennan rolled in Class 4A, Division I, beating Leander Rouse 30-7. Brennan’s dominant defense gave up only its second touchdown in over two months. Brennan’s defense has given up only 37 points in 14 games this season. San Antonio Madison’s defense forced three Converse Judson turnovers, turning two into scores and stopped the Rockets on a goal line stand with just 20 seconds remaining. San Antonio Johnson had the biggest upset in the Alamo city, knocking our Cibolo Steele 42-41. Hunter Rittiman completed 11/14 passes for 210 yrds and five touchdowns, but it too the Johnson defense to stop Steele’s two point conversion try with just 24 seconds left to seal the victory. LaGrange won the 3A Division IV championship, edging Gonzales 21-3 at frigid Bastrop. The Leopards will draw Carthage in the Semi finals. Fairfield served notice as a title contender in 3A, Division II with a 42-7 rout of Rockdale. They will face Sinton, who ousted LaVernia 27-14. IN 1A, Division II, unbeaten Falls City knocked out La Pryor 55-0 to set up a semi final rematch with Tenaha next week. Hemphill transfer Justin Twine rushed for 173 yards and two scores, while throwing a touchdown pass for the Beavers. Refugio knocked off defending 2A champion East Bernard 40-34 . Pt. Lavaca Calhoun stayed on the ground, using their wishbone attack to beat Alamo Heights 46-22. The SandCrabs rushed 75 times for 485 yards, with Cory Williams running for 194 yards to lead the way.
EAST TEXAS:
In a top 3A matchup, Carthage raced by West Orange Stark. Tevin Pipkin rushed for 226 yards and scored twice as the Bulldogs wrapped up the Region III title in Division I. They will meet unbeaten Kilgore in the semi-finals as Kilgore beat district rival Chapel Hill 59-19, as Kevrin Justice and Benny Colbert combined for 344 yards rushing . In Class 2A, Division I, White Oak forced 5 turnovers and shutout Franklin 31-0. IN Class A Division II, Tenaha beat Bremond 24-7 as Chavis Gregory scored on a blocked punt and a 43 yard reception in the first half. Waskom beat Corrigan Camden 24-22 in a matchup of two unbeaten teams in Clas 2A, Division II. IN Class 1A, Division I Mart moved one step closer to a return to Arlington, ousting Bosqueville 58-26. The Panthers will meet Shiner, as the Comanches edged Thorndale 14-10.
WEST TEXAS:
All games in West Texas were postponed to Monday night. In 3A, Stephenville beat Lubbock Cooper 42-28 as Jarrett Stidham completed 19/30 passes for 330 yards and one td. Graham knocked out Shallowater 45-14 as QB Ben Davis completed 22/31 for 252 and three scores, while rushing for 91 yards. IN 2A, Wall beat Eastland 40-28 with Luke Dacey rushing for 234 yards and five touchdowns. Cisco defeated Canadian 42-14 with Colton Kent totaling 301 yards and four scores. In 1A. Stamford edged New Deal 29-26 as Bo Wimberley totaled 333 yards and four touchdowns. Wellington shut out Seagraves 52-0 with Terry Gilbreath rushing for 274 yards and six touchdowns. Albany edged Muenster 20-13 with Caleb Masters rushing for 162 yards and 2 touchdowns.
