Allen Wins Back To Back Championships With An Impressive Win Over Pearland
The Allen Eagles won their 3rd all-time state championship with a convincing win over the Pearland Oilers 63-28 in the 5A Division I championship game in front of a record crowd of 54,347. The Eagles also won titles in 2008 & last year. The Oilers is now 1-1 all-time in champioship game. They beat Euless Trinity for the title in 2010.
Pearland started the game with an 12 play 81 yard touchdown drive. RB JaColbie Butler (1,536 yards 8.6 avg. 25 TDs rushing on the season) had several good runs on the drive. The score was on a 13 yard touchdown pass from QB Connor Heath (coaches son who has only started the last 4 games) to WR Carter Jefferson with 7:23 left in the first. Allen's first play was a 36 yard pass from QB Kyler Murray (3,392 yards 42 TDs only 8 INTs passing, 1,095 yards 18 TDs rushing on the season) to WR Cole Carter to the Pearland 28. A few plays later, RB Jaelen Barlow went in from 6 yards out. The drive was 4 plays, 64 yards and it only took 44 seconds. The game was tied at 7 with 6:33 left. After a Oiler punt, Murray has a spectacular run for 57 yards down to the Pearland 8 yard line. Two plays later on a 3rd and goal from the Oiler 1, Murray tries to run it in but is stopped and Oiler LB Justin Phillips (86 tackles 11 TFL on the season) strips the ball from him and goes 84 yards the other way. Only a big hustle play by WR Kendall Clinton saves the score. Two plays later Oiler RB Zachary Boegler goes in from 1 yard out and Pearland leads 14-7 with 1:40 left in the first. Allen's Chad Adams takes the kickoff, bounces off of a tackler and takes it 82 yards for a score with an incredible leap from the 4 yard line into the end zone as he was hit by an Oiler defender. The score was 14-14 with 1:21 left. The Oilers run 2 more plays to finish of a wild 1st quarter with the score tied at 14.
Allen takes over after a good punt and Murray make some terrific throws with the last one going 19 yards to Jalen Guyton for the score. The Eagles lead 21-14 with 11:17 remaining until half. The scoring drive was 3 plays 69 yards that took up only 27 seconds. The Oilers were forced to punt again and the Eagles wen 49 yards to score as Murray hit Carter again this time from 9 yards out to take a 28-14 lead with 8:46 left. After another Oiler punt, Murray keeps making great throws and Barlow scores on a 2 yard run and Allen leads 35-14 with 4:32 left. The drive was 5 plays 76 yards that took 1:01. The Oilers turned the ball over on downs on their next possession and Allen looked to be in control. Oiler DB Conner Chidester picked off a Murray pass and took it 58 yards to the Allen 19. Heath did a jump pass to RB Hayden Cole from 5 yards out to score with 16 seconds left in the half. The Allen lead was cut to 35-21 and that was how the half ended. Allen goes for it on a 4th & 1 at the Oiler 23 on their first possession fo the 2nd half and Pearland stops them with 9:03 left in the quarter. Pearland has to punt and Murray takes Allen down the field again on another great run. They finish the drive with a 36 yard pass from Murray to Guyton for the score to extend the Allen lead to 42-21 with 4:34 remaining in the 3rd. Pearland is forced to punt and the ball hits off of the returners fingertips and the Oilers recover at the Allen 28 yard line. Things start to get heated and Allen has 2 penalties thrown on them on the same play to take the ball to their 8 yard line. Allen gets the stop though as DB Jaylon Jones intercepts a pass in the end zone with 1:32 left. Allen goes 80 yards on 6 plays including a 49 yard pass from Murray to Guyton. The final 18 yards was a pass from Murray to Carter. Allen leads 49-21 with 23 seconds left in the quarter. Allen kicked of but Pearland was not able to catch the kick and Allen recovered at the Pearland 38 yard line. Allen runs 1 play and score as Adams goes in on a reverse. Allen leads 56-21 with 6 seconds left. The kickoff ends the 3rd quarter.
The Oilers turned the ball over on downs after a 4 minute drive to start the 4th quarter and Allen took over at their own 26. The Eagles score on a 36 yard run by Murray to put Allen up 63-21 with 7:14 left in the game. Allen intercepts on Pearlands next possession and takes over with 5:26 remaining. Pearland gets a score with 1:00 left in the game to bring the score to 63-28. Allen runs out the clock from there.
