Cameron Yoe Uses Big 2nd Half To Win Back to Back Championships

The Cameron Yoe Yoemen used a strong running game to pull away in the 2nd half to win the Class 2A Division I Championshi 35-14 over the Wall Hawks. Cameron is now 3-1 all-time in state championship games also winning in 1981 and having a loss in 2010. This was the first championship game for Wall.
Wall opened the game with a good drive but was stopped on 4th down at the Yoe 27. After Yoe punted Wall RB Brent Matschek (1,062 yards 13.1 avg season) broke free on an option play to score from 54 yards out as Wall took a 7-0 lead with 4:59 left in the first. Yoe responded though as WR Aaron Sims (67 catches 752 yards 14 touchdowns receiving on the year) bobbled the kickoff but found a seam and went 73 yards to the Wall 22 yard line. Yoe's Sophomore RB Traion Smith (253 carries 2,203 yards 8.7 avg. 26 TDs in the season) was able to take it in from 2 yards out with 3:32 left to tie it up at 7. Wall fumbleed on their first paly of the next posession and Yoe recovered at the Wall 30 yard line but Yoe lost 3 yards in 3 plays and their kicker was short on a 49 yard field goal try. That brought an end to the 1st quarter.
Wall had another good drive and made a 4th down play at the Yoe 29 but missed a 41 yard field goal. Yoe only needed 5 plays to score as they got 3 big running plays and Smith took it in from 1 yard out to take the lead 14-7 with 4:54 left until half. Wall took over and drove to the Yoe 10 . From there they faced a 4th & 6. Theyl did not bring on the kicker...they went for it and scored on a run by RB Kris Gutierrez which tied it up at 14 leaving 11 seconds on the clock. The teams only had 3 drives in the 3rd quarter. Yoe turned it over on downs at the Wall 39 yard line with 8:15 left. Wall took over but had to punt. On Yoe's next drive, they went to punt but they faked it and Jason Kopriva threw a 16 yard pass down to the Wall 35. Yoe made it to the Wall 11 as the 3rd quarter ends with the score still tied at 14.
On the 2nd play of the 4th quarter Kopriva his Sims for a 6 yard touchdown pass to take a 21-14 lead with 11:19 left in the game. On Wall's next posession, they coughed up the ball and Yoe recovers at the Wall 40. Smith had some tough runs and finished it off with a 16 yard touchdown run and Yoe led 28-14 with 7:09 left. Wall fumbles again as Yoe LB Michael Gelner stripped the ball and Yoe recovers at the Wall 36. Smith takes it in from 2 yards out for his 4th touchdown for a 35-14 lead with 2:01 left. Smith finished with 22 carries 155 yards and 4 touchdowns.
