Carthage Wins Battle Of The Bulldogs To Win 4th Overall State Championship

The Carthage Bulldogs won the Battle of the Bulldogs, The Battle of the red and white, The Battle of East Texas in the Class 3A Division I Championship game with a 34-21 win over the Kilgore Bulldogs. Carthage won their 4th state championship since 2008. They also were the state runner up in 1991. Kilgore was playing in their 2nd overall state championship game. They won the title in 2004.

Carthage used a good combination of run/pass and used all of their offensive stars to get a touchdown pass from QB Blake Bogenschutz (3,805 yards 55 TDs only 3 INTs passing this season, 9,371 yards & 119 TDs career) from the 6 yards out. The drive went 76 yards on 10 plays using the running of RB Tevin Pipkin (1,995 yards 8.9 avg 20 TDs rushing on the season) and the receiving of WR Tee Goree 86 catches (1,689 yards 19.6 avg 28 TDs for the season). Kilgore RB Kevrin Justice (34 TDs 1,872 9.5 avg rushing this season) scored from 1 yard out and the score was now tied at 7 with 1:12 left in the first. They showed off their offensive stars also with QB Benny Colbert (1,460 total yards 16 total TDs this season) and RB Davieonta "Juju" Brown (1,305 yards 19 TDs rushing in the season) both having big plays. The drive went 12 plays for 71 yards. The 1st quarter ends with Carthage driving.

Carthage drives all the way to the Kilgore 1 and goes for it on 4th & Goal and they do not make it into the end zone but Kilgore was offsides. They got another try and Kilgore stopped them again. Kilgore took over but had to punt. Carthage was able to put together another good drive and Goree cashes it in with a 13 yard end around to make the score 14-7 Carthage with 2:34 left until half. The drive was 10 plays for 78 yards. Kilgore started their drive at the Carthage 22 with a good kickoff return on a short kickoff and a personal foul against Carthage. They had to settle for a 41 yard field goal try but it was wide right with 1:21 remaining. Carthage went for a 4th & 5 at their own 45 with 38 seconds left and did not make it and left 33 seconds on the clock. Kilgore was able to get a short drive and got a 39 yard field goal as time expired. Carthage led 14-10 going in at half. Half Time Stats: Total Yards Kilgore 109 Carthage 261

Kilgore used a few good runs to set up for a 27 yard field goal but it bounced off the goal post and was no good to start off the 3rd quarter. On Carthage's next posession Bogenschutz hits Okeeron Rutherford (16th TDs of the season) for a 51 yard scoring strike to cap a 5 play 80 yard drive. Carthage now leads 21-10 with 6:25 left in the 3rd quarter. Kilgore goes 3 & out and punts to the Carthage 41 on their next posession. Carthage's 1st play is a 49 yard pass to Pipkin down to the Kilgore 10. Goree takes it in on another end around from 10 yards out to score and Carthage leads 28-10 with 4:23 in the 3rd. The 3rd quarter ends with Kilgore driving.

Kilgore sticks with the running game and Colbert gets away for a 32 yard score to tighten the score up 28-17 with 11:07 left in the game. The momentum looks to be swinging to Kilgores side. Carthage has to punt but Kilgore has to punt it back and Carthage takes over at their own 5 with 6:46 left. Kilgore picks off a Bogenschutz at the Carthage 27 yard line though with 4:17 left. Three runs by Justice the final going from 1 yard out and a touchdown. Their 2 pt. conversion fails and Carthage still leads 28-23 with 3:40 left. Bogenschutz recovers the onside kick at their own 48. Pipken runs over a defender to get a key first down and Bogenschutz gets a good run then Pipken breaks through the line and goes 23 yards for the score with 50 seconds left to give Carthage a 34-23 lead. Kilgore was unable to get anything on their last posession.
