Houston Roundup 12/24/13

Texas High School Football Roundup for the HoustonTexas high school football

Semifinal Playoffs

Cedar Hill Shocks Katy in State Final: Katy pulled a ‘Bama. Yeah, I said it. The Tigers are still the most talented team in 5A DI, and my conservative estimation is that the Tigers beat Cedar Hill seven out of 10 times on the gridiron. But on this night, they just couldn’t seal the deal in the 34-24 loss. Rodney Anderson had an 81-yard punt return TD called back on a hold, the Tigers could not recover a DeMarkus Lodge fumble that was picked up for another score and their fumbled kickoff sealed the win for the Longhorns. The loss ends Katy’s 31-game winning-streak and gives Cedar Hill revenge after last year’s 35-24 title game defeat. Gary Joseph’s squad will be back next season to go for a record-tying eighth title.

Pearland Cannot Pull Upset Over Allen: The Allen Eagles are not just the best  team in the state – they have a shot at being the best in the country. That will be no consolation to Pearland after a 63-28 defeat in the title game, but facts are facts. In front of a record-crowd of 54,347, the Oilers hung in there early with a 14-7 lead off an 81-yard opening drive and a Justin Phillips 86-yard fumble return. Then Eagles’ quarterback Kyler Murray started to work his magic, finishing with 468 total yards and five touchdowns. Despite two touchdowns from Zachary Boegler, the Oilers were only able to put up 164 yards of offense to Allen’s 390. Congratulations to both teams on a great season.

Thanks for a Great Season: As I’m sure you already know, this will be the last Houston Roundup of the season. I want to thank all of you that followed this column every week. It was a great season here at LSG and we are all excited for what 2014 brings. Have a happy, safe holiday season and be sure to check in all offseason for our previews as well as the always-interesting 7-on-7 season.
