The Stamford Bulldogs rallied after being down at one time 28-7 to win the Class 1A Division I State Championship over the Shiner Comanches 41-28. This was the 5th all-time state championship for the Bulldogs winning crowns in 1955, 1956, 1958, 2011, 2012 and now 2013. They were the Runner Up team in 1959. The Outstanding Player Of The Game went to Stamford QB Bo Wimberly who finished 16 of 30 passing for 252 yards and 5 total touchdowns. He was also the Defensive player of the year. Last year, Stamford QB Hagen Hutchinson won both awards which was the first time in history that the two awards had ever gone to the same person.
Shiner started the game showing off their strong rushing attack (322 yards per game during the season) with 5:46 drive but the drive stalled at the Bulldog 37 and Stamford took over. It only took 1 play for the Stamford superstars to strike paydirt as QB Bo Wimberly (28 passing TDs & 27 rushing TDs during the season) hit WR James Washington (24 receiving touchdowns on the season and Oklahoma State recruit) for a 63 yard bomb to but Stamford up 7-0. The Comanches responded quickly on their next possesion as RB Marcus Coleman scored his 16th touchdown of the year on a 53 yard run to tie the game at 7 and that is where the 1st quarter ended.
In the 2nd quarter, Shiner drove down the field with all running plays until they shocked the Bulldogs with a pass play that went to wide open receiver for a touchdown to take the lead 14-7 with 8:37 left until halftime. Stamford took over and drove to the Shiner 16 but Wimberly was picked off in the end zone by Saftey Tyler Patek with 6:26 remaining. Shiner went back to the ground and QB Jacob Stafford (1,179 yards rushing 20 TD's on the season) score from 1 yard out to make it 21-7 Shiner with 2:11 left. During that posession, Stamford QB/DB Bo Wimberly went down with an shoulder injury. He was back on the next possesion (he said his shoulder popped out on the defensive play but they were able to pop it back in) but went 0-3 passing and the Bulldogs punted where he punted the ball 63 yards to the shiner 1. Shiner ran out the clock from there to take a 21-7 lead in a half. Half Time Stats: Stamford 148 total yards (125 passing) Shiner 253 yards (244 rushing) Shiner led time of possession 17:58 to 6:02.
Shiner started off 2nd half with a low line drive kick that bounced off a Stamford lineman and Shiner recovered at the 50 yard line. The Comanches found success running to the left behind OL #77 Dillon Kalina and #62 Tanner Pietsch and finally scored on a reverse from 22 yards out to take a 28-7 with 7:34 left in the 3rd quarter. Bulldog QB Bo Wimberly then started hitting some passes and had a good 19 yard run before he took it over from the 1 for a touchdown to cut the Shiner lead to 28-14. On the next Shiner posession, the momentum started to swing and Shiner punted from their 38. The Shiner defense held though on the next posession and the quarter came to an end with the Comanches ledaing 28-14. Through 3 quarters stats : Bulldogs 43 rush 167 pass on 32 plays Shiner 325 run 9 pass 56 plays.
Shiner was stopped on 4th down at the Stamford 41 early in the 4th quarter. Wimberly took over and went 53 yards on a scramble to make the score 28-21 Shiner with 10:39 left in the game. On Shiners next drive, they made 2 4th down conversions before coming up short or their 3rd try. Just like they opened the game, it took Stamford 1 play to score as Wimberly hit Washington again on a 60 yard pass play to tie the game up at 28 with 3:42 remaining. On the very 1st play for Shiner...they fumbled and Stamford recovered at the Shiner 43 with 3:21 left. Wimberly scored on a 12 yard run with 1:55 left. The PAT was blocked and Stamford now led 34-28. Shiner had one more chance but James Washington intercepted a pass and took it 77 yards for a touchdown and the score was then 41-28 Stamford with 43 seconds left.
Final Stats Shiner finished with 426 total yards to 366 for Stamford. Shiner also led in time of posession 37:30 to 10:30.
