Wellington Wins 1st Ever Championship Game In Convincing Style

The Wellington Skyrockets fell behind 6-0 early on but went on to score the next 42 points to win the Class 1A Division II Championship over the Beavers from Falls City 42-20. It was the Skyrockets first state championship in their first state championship game. Falls City is now 1-1 in championship games. They won the championship in 2010. Wellington had made the semifinals the past 2 seasons before finally advancing this season.

Falls City opened up with an impressive drive and had Justin Twine (1,541 yards 18.1 avg 25 TDs signed to play baseball with TCU) scoring from 8 yards out. The 2 point conversion failed which left the score 6-0 Falls City. Wellington QB Klark Ashmore (177 of 254 2,247 yards 30 TDS) found that the Falls City defense was pretty tough led by DL Conner Jendrusch (73 tackles 9 TFL) and LB Eric Wiatrek (238 total tackles on the season) when he threw only his 5th INT of the season as LB Eric Wiatrek picked off his pass at the Wellington 32 with 7:14 left. A few plays later though Wellington RB/DB Terry Gilbreath (189 carries 2,697 yards and 50 total TDs) intercepted the ball at their 20 to give the Skyrockets the ball back with 6:22 left. Wellington made one 4th down conversion but failed the 2nd time they tried at the Falls City 24 to turn the ball over on downs to end the 1st quarter with Falls City leading 6-0.

Wellington went on an 11 play 73 yard scoring drive after a Falls City punt. The score was a 8 yard pass from Ashmore to Gilbreath. The 2 pt conversion failed to put the score at 6 all with 4:58 left until half. Falls City was stopped on 4th down at the Wellington 41 on their next drive with 1:52 left. Ashmore took over and thew a 9 yard TD pass to Logan Martindale with 38 seconds remaining. The 2 pt comversion good and Wellington now led 14-6. Falls City had a great screen play set up when they took over which would have been a TD if Ashmore had not made a saving tackle. That ended the 2nd quarter with Wellington leading 14-6. Falls City started the 2nd half with an onside kick but Wellington recovered. The Skyrocket drive stalled at Falls City 42 so they punted to Falls City 14. The Beavers fumbled the ball at their own 41 as Ashmore ripped the ball out and Wellington recovered. The Skyrockets went to the running game and Gilbreath scored from 12 yards out. Ashmore caught a 2 pt conversion as Wellington took a 22-6 lead with 5:59 remaining in the 3rd. Wellington took over at the Falls City after a short put and Gilbreath took it in from 15 yards out for his 3rd touchdown of the game. The 2 point conversion was good giving Wellington a 28-6 lead with 2:11 left. On the next play for Falls City, Skyrocket DL Walker Williams (52 tackles 11 sacks on the year), the coaches son knocks the pitch from the QB down and picks it up at the Falls City 24 yard line and takes it in for a touchdown. The 2 pt conversion was no good and Wellington led 34-6 with 1:58 left. The 3rd quarter ended with Falls City punting.

Skytocket QB Ashmore scored from the 3 after another impressive drive. The 2 pt conversion was good and Wellington led 42-6 with 8:24 remaining in the game. Falls City did not give up though as Twine went in from 8 yards out at the 5:28 marek. The 2 pt conversion failed to make the score 42-12. Falls City did recover an onside kick but they were offsides. The next time Wellington recovered. Wellington punted on their next posession to the Falls City 12 with 3 minutes left. Twine took off on a 58 yard scoring run for his 3rd TD of the game. The 2 pt conversion good making the score 42-20 with 1:48 left. After Wellington recovered the onside kick, they were able to run the clock out.

Walker Williams was named Defensive Player Of The Game and the Offensive Player Of The Game was Terry Gilbreath who had 25 carries for 183, 3 total TDs and had an INT on defense.
