Fourteen (14) schools look to be moving up in classificaiton to the highest classification when the UIL introduces the initial schools for Class 6A this year.
Class 6A will consist of schools with an enrollment of 2,100+. Out of the 14 newcomers to the big classification, one is the 2 time defending state champion in what was Class 4A and another was our pre-season favorite to beat the team last year.
The schools are (with their enrollment #'s) -- Dallas Highland Park (2106), Lubbock Monterey (2108), Houston Northbrook (2117.5), Leander Rouse (2128), Mission (2136), Friendswood (2157), Wolfforth Frenship (2178), Houston Reagan (2190), Montgomery (2198), Kyle Lehman (2217), Denton Guyer (2291), Buda Hays Consolidated (2319), Byron Nelson (2379) and Humble Summer Creek (2410).
It has been 26 years since Dallas Highland Park has been in the highest classification. It has been 12 years for Houston Reagan and 8 for Buda Hays Consolidated. Recent teams have been Houston Northbrook (years ago) and Lubbock Monterey, Mission and Denton Guyer (played in the 2010 Class 5A Division II championship game) who were all playing in 5A 2 years ago. Leander Rouse, Friendswood, Wolfforth Frenship, Montgomery, Kyle Lehman, Byron Nelson, Humble Summer Creek will all be moving up for their first time in their histories.
These schools have had great success in Class 4A. It will be fun to see how they match-up against the largest schools in Texas.
