The Scary Depth in Class 6A Region I

Texas High School Football's Group of Death
We all know it’s difficult to repeat as state champions in Texas High School Football. Players leave, coaches move on, and sometimes district re-alignment happens.
Within the new Region I of Class 6A , thirty-three (33) teams made the playoffs last year. Ten of those teams made it to the Regional round, six made it to the State Quarterfinals, and three won State Championships: Allen, Cedar Hill, and Denton Guyer. Allen and Denton Guyer each won their second in a row. Cedar Hill narrowly missed two in a row as well by splitting titles with Katy.
This creates a problem for teams trying to return to that hallowed ground. The playoff schedule creates matchups of top teams as early in the second round. Teams within Region I potentially run through a gauntlet of high caliber opponents from the second round till the state quarterfinals. A gauntlet consisting of Southlake Carroll, Euless Trinity, DeSoto and other powerhouse teams.
Games such as Southlake vs Trinity and Allen vs DeSoto which have created some of the best recent quarterfinal and semi-final matchups, now might be deciding who gets out of the region rounds. This also allows opening round matchups to have the feel of the state semi-final and you can be sure whichever team comes out of this Region is certainly battle tested.
A good comparison to Region I would be the World Cup’s “Group of Death” - a name given to the specific group (or region) of the World Cup that is considered the toughest for top teams to survive. Region I of the 2014 Texas high school football playoffs will see perennial top programs knocked out in the 1st and 2nd rounds creating shock-waves around the state for sure.
Survive and advance has a completely different meaning within Region I of Class 6A because you haven’t survived until you reach the state semi-finals and conquered the Group of Death.
