60th Battle of the Bell – Rockdale @ Cameron Yoe
-
Updated: October 8, 2014
According to the History of Rockdale, Milam County Website:
The Rockdale-Cameron game is one of the state’s best rivalry games.Since 1954, the winner has proudly rung a big brass victory bell, which is symbolic of Milam County football supremacy. The bell, taken from a steam locomotive, was donated to the two schools by the Rockdale, Sandow & Southern Railroad in 1954. Bragging rights to Milam County football supremacy come with the bell; therefore, the two communities encourage their charges to bring home the brass beauty for another year. Over the years the bell has helped fuel one of Texas high school football’s longest and most-storied rivalries.
The Bell itself has been through a lot of abuse. From being thrown in the Little River to having broken on numerous occasions, the battle continued. In 2001, a Cameron resident, Catherine Thomas, replaced the original bell with a new one that is still being used today.
Cameron has retained the bell for the past two years with their 34-0 (2012) and 54-33 (2013) victories. Rockdale's last win was in 2011 when they fought and won a tough 11-10 battle. Both teams are playing well this year and the excitement surrounding the Battle of the Bell couldn't be any higher.

Rockdale is riding high at 5-0 right now but haven't played competition at the level the Yoemen have battled. The Yoemen lead the series 41-18 all-time and this 60th meeting are (according to some of the locals) expected again to win. That is the thing though with rivalry games, no matter how lopsided the records, no matter how much better a team appears on paper, when the first whistle blows all bets are off. The series has been a regular before it became a Cool Name Game and Cameron Yoe leads the all-time series 62-23-3.
