The Converse Judson Rockets faced something they haven't in 38 years last night... the possibility of ending a season without a winning record. Going into the game with a 5-4 record, the Rockets needed at least a tie to ensure an official winning record.
Their opponent, the Smithson Valley Rangers came into the game with a seven game winning streak against Judson. The last time the Rockets defeated the Rangers was ten years ago - a 30-15 win in 2004. Fear of losing the streak of consecutive winning seasons may have sparked the Rockets to jump out early as they led 24-0 at halftime. Coach Larry Hill's Rangers however, have never been a team to roll over.
Smithson Valley not only made it a game, but made it close enough that the death of the streak was a real possibility. In the end, Judson tool the 31-26 victory and extended their history record to 38 straight seasons with a winning record.
Converse Judson will host the San Antonio Churchill Chargers at 7:30 p.m. Friday to begin their playoff run.
Refugio's 10-0 season would have tied Judson's streak at 37 and left them as the highest ranked team with a streak still alive. Another top 10 team, Corpus Christi Calallen (31 consecutive) too needed a win this week to keep their streak alive.
- Converse Judson - 38 (1977-present)
- Refugio - 37 (1978-present)
- Plano - 36 (1960-1995)
- Pilot Point - 33 (1977-2010)
Austin Westlake and Celina move into a 4-way tie for #8 all-time with Dallas Carter and Universal City Randolph. They all sit at 28 wins but only Celina and Westlake's streaks are still active.
