Picture this, Odessa Permian vs San Angelo Central playing under the lights at Ratfliff Stadium. It’s the first Friday night of November; the last game of the regular season and the district title is on the line. No this isn’t some scenario Buzz Bissinger or Peter Berg created. This will be the scene when the Permian Panthers face off against the San Angelo Central Bobcats. Both teams clinched playoff spots weeks ago, but this Friday they play for pride and district bragging rights.
The home team Panthers, coached by Blake Feldt, head into Friday’s game with an impressive body of work and (7-2) record. Last year was Feldt’s first season as head coach at Permian and they finished the season with an unimpressive (4-6) record. Thanks in part to the return of veteran starters like defensive back Jax Welch and linebacker Josh Nguyen; the defense has been the Panthers’ calling card during their resurgent season. Youthful additions, like sophomore linebacker Hunter Hawkins have given fans hope that this type of defense won’t be a one season wonder. Offensively, Heath Wood quarterbacks an efficient and balanced spread attack. With help from receivers Kobe Robinson and Taylor Thompson, the passing game has been successful in opening up running lanes for thousand yard rusher, Brandon Bailey.
The Davis family knows a thing or two about coaching in big games. San Angelo Central coach Brent Davis, looks poised to lead his team to back to back 10 win seasons. While his brother, Brad Davis has had success as the coach at Wolfforth Frenship. Their dad, legendary head coach, Bobby Davis was also a long time coach at Frenship. Enough about the Davis family coaching tree, the real story is the Central Bobcats look to stay undefeated in district play. Central has at times this season, made scoring look easy. This is largely due in part to the success of quarterback Braden Hucks. Last year Hucks was Central’s running back, which would shed some light on how he has had so much success as a dual-threat. This success wouldn’t have come without the help of a trio receivers and some experience along the offensive line, by way of Ben Weatherby and Braxton Webb.
If history repeats itself this Friday, then Permian should come way the winners, as they hold an (8-2) record in the series, since 1994. San Angelo Central however, hasn’t lost since early September and their defense looks to keep it that way. Both teams come equipped with balanced offenses, and defenses that give up less than twenty points a game. The district title looks to run through San Angelo, but will Mojo magic be on display Friday night in Odessa?
