The matchup between Stephenville and Big Spring back in October was one of our Games of the Week (Premium content.) In it, I expected the Big Spring victory, but not the way it happened. What looked to be a showdown of two of the top QBs in the state, ended when Stephenville's Jarrett Stidham left the game in the first quarter with a hand injury. Big Spring's Tobyn Tannehill then engineered a 64-57 victory.
Fast forward to last night and the two met once again - this time with much more on the line - the 4A Division I Regional playoff. Stidham stayed healthy throughout and the outcome was different this time.
1st Quarter
Big Spring drew first blood as Tannehill scrambled 11 yards for the score with 9:58 remaining in the 1st. Two plays and 20 seconds later, Stidham hit Austin Stufflebean from 21 yards out to tie the game 7-7. After recovering a Big Spring fumble, Stidham's second TD (7yds to Darian Brown) gave Stephenville their first lead 14-7 (9:00 1st.) The Yellow Jackets extended the lead to 21-7 with Stidham's 14 yard run. Big Spring regrouped and finally put it across the goal line on a 22 yard Tobyn Tannehill run. The missed PAT left the score 21-13 (2:05 1st.) Stidham answered back with another pass to Stufflebean (20 yards) leaving the first quarter score 28-13.
2nd Quarter
Halfway through the second quarter, Tobyn Tannehill connected with Garrett Wigington (20 yds) to cap a 13-play, 80-yard drive. (28-20) Stephenville extended their lead to 35-20 when Stidham finished off a 99 yard drive with a 2 yard TD run with 1:44 remaining in the half. The Yellow Jackets' D held Big Spring once again and Michael Fick managed to his a 20 yard field goal as time expired. 38-20 was the score at halftime.
3rd Quarter
Stephenville really started to run away with things when they ended their opening drive with another 2 yard TD. The score was 45-20 with 10:20 remaining in the 3rd and it just got bigger from there. Stephenville's Williams added a 12 yard run to complete the scoring in the third.
4th Quarter
Jarrett Stidham added another TD pass to Stufflebean (30 yards) and Tannehill hit a 7 yarder to Preston Alexander. Wigington ended the scoring with a 6 yard scamper for Big Spring. The final was 59-32 Stephenville (9-3, 3-0) over Big Spring (9-3, 3-1) and will move on to face Graham (11-2, 3-0) in the Quarterfinal round.
