Waskom Wins First State Championship During 3A DII Victory

The Waskom Wildcats won their first state championship during their 41-22 win over the Newton Eagles in the Class 3A Division II Championship game at AT&T Stadium. This was the Wildcats first ever showing in the championship game and it was the 5th state championship game for the Eagles. They are now 3-2 in the big game. Their last championship win was in 2005.

Both teams came into the game with strong running games and they stuck with what brought them. Their was only one (1) pass thrown in the entire first half and that was a trick play. The first quarter ended with neither team reaching pay dirt but in the 2nd quarter the scoreboard started to light up as Waskom took a 20-8 lead into intermission. The highlight of the quarter was an 88 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Waskom's Chan Amie.

Waskom got the ball first in the second half and immediately took the ball 85 yards to score and make it 27-8. After the two teams traded possessions, Waskom punted the ball to the Newton 2 yard line. Newton fumbled and a Waskom defender recovered the ball in the end zone and Waskom led 34-8. A few late scores brought the final to 41-22.

Waskom finished the game with 346 yards rushing and they did not throw any passes in the game. Newton came into the game averaging 338 yards rushing per game. They were held to 201 yards rushing in this game.

The defensive player of the game was Waskom's LB #15 Chan Amie who finished the game with 23 tackles. He was much more than a defensive standout as he was all over the place in every aspect of the game.  Chan also managed an 88 yard kickoff return for a TD in addition to being all over the place on offense too.

Waskom's RB #1 Kevin Johnson was the offensive player of the game. He led the Wildcats in rushing with 106 yards.

The attendance for the game was 13,942. The combined population of Waskom and Newton is 4,583. More than three times that many watched them at Jerry World.
