San Antonio Madison looks to return to former glory
The Mavericks of San Antonio Madison went 4-6 last year. They are not accustomed to that kind of showing at all. In fact, 2014 ended 23 consecutive non-losing seasons and they have had winning seasons 30 of the last 37 years.
The 2014 season ended for the Mavericks when they lost in a tie-breaker to San Antonio MacArthur to miss the playoffs for the first time in 8 seasons . They finished with a 3-3 district record tying MacArthur for 4th in the district. MacArthur advanced by winning their head to head meeting 43-27 when district play began. The Mavericks also lost a wild one in triple overtime to San Antonio Johnson in week 9.
It will be interesting to see if the Mavericks can bounce back in 2015. Madison graduated five (5) all-district players, The one all-district player returning is Sophomore TE Nate Davis (2nd team all-district.)
In 2015, district 26-6A will once again be loaded with Churchill, Lee, Johnson and Reagan leading the way. Can Madison bounce back in this tough district with little experience?
They are not without some positives though. Madison has a top-notch head coach in Mark Smith who replaced legendary head coach Jim Streety last year. Smith has also been a head coach at Kerrville Tivy 2002-2011 (93-33) and Converse Judson 2012-2013 (19-7). His all-time coaching record is at 116-46.
It will not be an easy road for Coach Smith and his Mavericks, but the program is rich in tradition and has a ton of community support.
